Unplayable using an AMD FX-8320 CPU

The game itself was well made, with excellent sound and story design and the graphics looked alright given that it's from 2006. That said, if you're still using an AMD FX based CPU like I am, you probably shouldn't buy this game. I returned it, because it was unplayble - there were multi second lockups while trying move units around and the game locked up completelt after scene changes forcing me to log out of Windows to kill it. This appears to be one of the games that were compiled using the Intel compiler in such a way to run poorly on AMD CPUs. Coupled with the design choices (particularly with the FPU design and cache latency) AMD made with the FX CPU it's basically the perfect storm of unplayability. This will be true for any of the AMD A series APUs as well, with exception of the "cat cores". My system can play No Man's Sky just fine though - it's all about the programming! AMD FX-8320 locked at 4GHz, Nvidia GTX 1660, 24GB DDR3 1600MHz RAM, 240GB SSD, 1080p resolution. Hope this helps save folks from some potential dissapointment or frustration.

Good RTS - Poor performance on modern PC

This is pretty good fast paced RTS with some 4x elements mixed in. There isn't anything exeptionally deep in the game, but still it manages to be fun in proper use of Star Wars license and varying enough gameplay. Land battles are bit boring, but luckily you can auto resolve most of them (you can auto resolve space battles too). That does mean, however, that you lose more units than you would by battling it yourself. It's a fair trade off in my opinion, because land troops are relatively cheap and the time you save, is considerable. Where this game truly shines are the space battles. They are exiting and intense, since you only have the fleet you attack with. You cannot build any units during battle and what you go into battle with are what you have. The game does impose unit limits, so you cannot have 20 destroyers and support craft in battle at the same time. You can only have limited amount and when they get destroyed you can jump in reinforcements, if you have any. The same applies to land battles, but there you have to hold landing sites in order to land troops. Like I mentioned, the game is not very deep or hugely complex and ultimately the biggest army wins, but all units are strong vs. something (and also weak vs. something) and you can turn the tide with smaller force if you utilize your army correctly. BUT! The two star score comes from the really bad performance on modern operating systems. It lags and stutters and is practically unplayable. The Forces of Corruption add-on campaing seems to work fine, but the vanilla Empire at War does not. There are fixes you can try, but even though they helped me some, the game was still in pretty bad shape and I would not recommend getting this. Shame, because all in all this is one of the good Star Wars games out there that would stand on its own even without the Star Wars license.

Shallow gameplay

This review is about the core game, I have never tried the expansion. If this seem unfair, you are free to ignore this review. Let's start with the most fun part of the game; space battles! When fighting in space you start with a small base, here you can produce spaceships, you can even drop them right into battle thanks to warp speed. To get resources it is important to take control over mines spread around the map. When fighting against big spaceships you can focus fire on specific parts such as shield, engine etc. This is really awesome and you think this would give you a lot of tactical options. It does, but tactics stops at a screeching halt here. The two existing factions have way too obvious weaknesses and strengths; the Rebels have stronger fighters that will always trump Empire fighters while the Empire have battleships that will always trump Rebel battleships, it is like a rule of nature. Imagine a game of rock, paper, scissors where Rebel fighters are flying scissors and Empire fighters are flying sheets of paper. The land battles are extremely shallow, no tactics are involved. Show up with more and better guns = win, nothing more to say here. The campaign features a 4x4 map of the galaxy where you move fleets and armies from planet to planet. The map is in real time, so watch out for enemy fleets sneaking up on you! To conquer a planet you first need to defeat the enemy fleet occupying the planet's space, then you can land troops and gain control of the planet. While 4x4 Star Wars sounds interesting it is unfortunately one big repeatable grind. To conclude; the most fun part of the game are the space battles, but there is not enough tactical depth to keep you interested for a long time. The campaign is boring and. Land battles disgust me. As a strategy game Empire At War is very flawed. Would give 2.5.

Boring game, not very special

Talking about the basic game without any mods. Yeah, it is still quite appealing, it looks satisfying (at least to me). However, all this thing could offer is the Star Wars name on top of it. Provided it was called Spacerun: Conquer the Galaxy, had a different music and different models rather than Star Destroyers or Y-Wings, I don't think it would had been that popular. I find this game very repetitive. Gameplay feels a bit slow, not very responsive. Maybe it lacks some very special features, something spicy on top of an average RTS. Still could be playable. Might give a try to the mods other highlighted here! What I really dislike is the "mainstream aiming" with almost everything in this game. Rather than having an unique OST and just occassionally playing the original music, you'll get sick of hearing the same "SW pop music" over and over again. I also miss something original in the story, some new appealing units/characters. Or do you really believe that the Rebellion would be using R2D2 and C3PO for all secret missions? It is an unique game for sure, there is no other game like this. But I really think that once you put off the SW mask (which is indeed too much overwhelming here), not much is left. But I've felt it since it's release. Just need to repeat it every few years as I tend to remember this game better than it is:-)
