Take one of the most amazing Star Wars games ever made and easily one of the best RTS games ever and throw in an excellent expansion pack and also fixes for higher resolution and 64bit OSes and you get this amazing game pack. EASILY worth the price! Well Done GOG!
This game, when it works, is amazing everything you want in an RTS. The graphics have aged surprisingly gracefully, there's a decent variety in units and playing the Empire feels very different than playing the Rebellion. Unfortunately this game runs like absolute garbage on modern hardware. It wont even run on my laptop despite it reaching the recomended requirements 10x over and on my gaming PC it barely runs, the framerate tanks and the game runs in slow motion in any but the smallest battle and it only gets worse as the game goes on. Looking at other reviews it seems that not everyone has this problem but be warned your experience may vary.
I’m a fairly big Star Wars fan. I am a really big RTS (Real Time Strategy) game fan. So, when you combine the two things together, I was super stoked to give it a try. This game is a bit old, so I wasn’t expecting the graphics to be phenomenal or anything, but I do expect the game to run smooth.
I am currently using Windows 10, and from what I have gathered there is a lot of lag when you play this game. I first started playing the Galactic Conquest part of the game, to only find out after a certain unit count your game will being to lag to a point where you can’t even play the game. It doesn’t matter if you turn the detail down or adjust the settings, its going to lag bad. I searched all over the internet looking for some kind of fix or patch that could optimize the game with no success. Everyone says while playing in that game mode its just going to be laggy.
So, I went and started a campaign game. It’s basically the same thing as the Galactic Conquest mode, it just doesn’t lag as bad. I was able to at least play a few missions with minimal lag. Upon trying to quit the game, the game will freeze and crash. In the end I decided to uninstall the game due to these issues.
I gave it a 2/5 stars, because its Star Wars and if you don’t mind a bit a lag you can slowly drag your way through a campaign game.
As a fan of Star Wars, I've always been wanting to try Empire at War, and so I purchased this game when it was on sale about a month ago and quickly became disappointed in the fact the base game refused to run under Windows 10 while its Forces of Corruption DLC ran perfectly; for this reason, I requested a refund and purchased this game from Steam which both EAW and its FOC DLC does run perfectly.
If you like strategie games and star wars, buy this now!
While the ground battles can sometimes be difficult to control, the space battles are the saving grace of this.
This game is also made 100 times better by mods like Awakening of the rebellion and Republic at war, however the newest version of Aotr is only on the steam workshop so if you are considering to buy and mod this game, get it on steam
