Don’t just control the galaxy…corrupt it!
SW:EAW is FAMOUS for its fcked up lag issues.
Long time ago, Petroglyph added its patch to patch it up - GOG DID NOT INCLUDE THAT PATCH!
Yes, you read it good - NO PATCH.
So that famous lag literary blew any fun away.
So, either wait till GOG becomes merciful and includes patch or do not buy that game.
P.S. Famous "run compatible with WIN 98/ME" is not working, nor is fixing 60fps.
No matter the modern hardware you have the game is optimized poorly and will eventually lag from being bottlenecked by using only one core. This causes horrible framerate lag and will eventually freeze your PC which will need a hard reset to come back. Don't buy this version!
Played this game on both an Intel i7 with a GTX 1060 and 16 GB RAM and an AMD Ryzen 2700X with 32 GB RAM and an RTX 2080. In both cases, the game will sit and chug to the point of stalling out during production, making the game virtually unplayable. When it does decide to work, the AI somehow miraculously manages to win every autoresolve encounter with sub-par invasion forces, meaning you must waste time participating in every tedious battle. The expansion pack does nothing but break the game further by introducing an overpowered faction that can essentially rule the battlefield without so much as lifting a finger. A Star Wars RTS could have been great. This isn't it.
The unmodified ("vanilla") game is poorly balanced and clunky, and has not aged well. The orignal "Empire at War" without the Forces of Corruption expansion is very poorly optimised, and will slow to a crawl even on fast modern systems. The Forces of Corruption expansion is much much smoother in this regard, but the new (Zann) faction is terribly overpowered, making the main way of playing the game frustrating and often futile.
In the past, this could be improved dramatically with third party mods. Unfortunately many of the major mods are now only supporting the Steam Hegemony version of the game.
I've loved this game since I first got it so when I accidentally deleted it from my hard drive and couldn't find the code to re-install it I just bought it on GOG. Unfortunately the original Empire at War is now lagging horribly on the galaxy map mode slowing to a crawl or freezing for several seconds regularly. Forces of Corruption runs fine for me so I have no idea what the problem is.
