There's an actual game here!

At first glance, I assumed this would be something like Goat Simulator: an absurd protagonist in a glitchy sandbox. Hilarity ensues... until minutes later, when you're bored of it. I'm happy to report that this is very much not the case. Squirrel with a gun is an actual game. In essence, its 3rd person shooter mechanics notwithstanding, it's a 3D platformer in a similar vein to Mario Odyssey and Donkey Kong Bananza (but with far lower production values). Ultimately, you are seeking out the golden acorns, which may be dangled from platforming challenges, hidden just out of sight for explorers, and/or involve some environmental puzzling. I've enjoyed the gameplay so far, but the real hook is the titular squirrel with a gun. I wasn't sure how well this would carry the title, but firing guns larger than your character, and turning into some kind of rodent 80s action hero (complete with stylish takedowns), as well as just firing wildly at the ground in order to extend your jump, are just funny conceits. I'm sure it'll become ho-hum soon enough, but it certainly drew me in. One mark I will make against the game is that it looks very generic. The graphics are surprisingly good, but it looks like an assemblage of stock assets, and doesn't really have its own visual identity. It's not a big deal and it hasn't stopped me from enjoying the game, but I've certainly noticed it. So, yeah, it's not a prestige title. But it's unique, fun, and funny. And while its polished, but generic visuals don't convey a sense of individual identity, there's more than enough identity baked into the gameplay, and its spermophile protagonist.

Squirrel with a Gun

I've been waiting for this game for so long! Thanks to Dee Dee Creations LLC and GOG. It's an original game that manages to stand out thanks to its completely offbeat concept. The idea of playing as an armed squirrel might seem absurd at first, but that's precisely what makes the game so charming. The humor, unexpected situations, and chaotic gameplay make for a very entertaining experience. The game skillfully blends action, exploration, and platforming a refreshing, funny, and unique game, perfect for having a good time without taking yourself too seriously.I'm giving it 4 stars, but I think the 5th star will come once I've finished the game.

Squirrelly fun!

Played this through over the weekend. It was funny and entertaining. Just don't expect any deeper plot or dialogue. - Not too hard, not too easy, at least when playing with keyboard and mouse. - The car control is a little too chaotic. It's OK for going from A to B faster, but when finer control was needed, it was annoying. Luckily not a major part of the game and challenges. - The boss fights are nicely designed. - The expansion (now built-in) has one "0 fall" challenge, which is the hardest part for 100% completion. After first run-through, I was almost ready to give up. Second time was already easier, and finally completed it on third (though had some luck). - I would have liked a proper percentage counter for how much of the game is complete. The current flag pole and list solution is great, but it doesn't convey the whole completion status. - Most of the outfits and accessories are nonsense, filling up the list. Would have liked actually useful items more (with or without drawbacks). Or at least separate the cosmetic items from functional items. But all in all, an enjoyable experience. Highly recommended.

Too Short

There are lots of different ways to solve the puzzles in this game....need to fall a long way to a button...did you try just blasting it with a rocket launcher? Or you could ride an enemy rocket to take you somewhere you need to be. There are only 2 main areas in the game and lots of little side places to explore, which leaves the main game over too fast and you just trying to 100% the golden acorns. I have a feeling more will be on its way hopefully!
