A friend and I used to play this about 20 years ago, he played half the guys and I played the other half. We competed to see who could kill the most enemies and get the highest/most medals. Great times!

I remember this game so clearly. 25 years ago, I went with my grandma and grandpa to the local store. At the time, I was too young to buy it myself, but my grandpa didn’t really understand PC games and ended up buying it for me. It was a lovely trip into town and a memory I cherish. Now, all I have left is the game in my drawer and the memory to hold on to. I would love to be able to play it again.

I got this game around the same time as I saw Saving Private Ryan. Soldiers at War felt like the perfect game to compliment my WW2 hype at the time. Similar to Silent Storm if it had maintained a more historically authentic theme throughout, it was a turn based tactical strategy game akin to Xcom. It has been a quarter of a century since I got to play this and I never had the pleasure of playing multiplayer. A GOG release would be an instant buy for me.

RE-RELEASE

 

Originally released in 1998, Soldiers at War is a turn-based squad-level tactical combat game developed by Random Games and published by SSI. It brought deep squad tactics to an authentic World War II setting.

 

Re-release is currently in development. Soldiers at War is being updated to run smoothly on modern systems, with the complete list of enhancements to be shared closer to the release date.
