Smelter is a strategy, action-platformer combo inspired by classics from the 16-bit era. Lead Smelter and Eve, along with the faithful Zirm forces by expanding Smelter’s territory across the Rumbly Lands in top-down strategy levels included in the Classic Mode, or dive into thrilling side-scrolling platforming mayhem with Action Mode, leaving Smelter’s forces to annex key locations themselves. Build, attack and advance your army -- unlock, upgrade and unleash elemental action skills against vicious enemies, perilous environments and take on dangerous bosses with Boss Rush Mode. Release the power of Smelter!

    STORY

After the untimely destruction of the Garden, Eve finds herself in an unfamiliar world with her beloved Adam nowhere to be found. In her search for Adam, she encounters Smelter, an unusually over-confident, winged creature with the powerful ability to transform and fuse with others, giving them incredible powers.

Offering his apparently “invaluable” assistance, Smelter transforms and fuses with Eve. They depart on a journey to the treacherous Rumbly Lands. There, they expand Smelter’s territory, allowing them to reach further into the various domains to find out what happened to her Adam, hoping to find him in one piece and find a way back home to their peaceful lives...

    Nice game and perfectly stable

I finished today the game. I enjoyed it. It's a nice platformer and I didn't had any stability issue as others may suggest. Perfectly stable for me I remove one star because I believe it's a bit expensive in my opinion ; if there was some cutscenes or more art i would have understood the price but 15eu for a 15h pure pixel game is a bit high. For the game itself the platform part of the game is great. The "RTS" part of the game is less interesting but adds variety and breaks the platform rithm which is a good thing for me ; alternating both modes is a nice fact. The Challenges are cool, some are really challenging. The game itself is a bit challenging without being punishing so perfect balance in my opinion Bottom line : cool game, but would have enjoyed a bit more substance and art behind

I hate the wall jump/grab mechanic

It´s simply unpolished and clunky, it makes way to difficult to progress through some stages. Way to many deaths caused by this aspect. Another thing is that checkpoints are not very well distributed, there were so many times I died because of an annoying stage with too many difficult platforming section in which I was sent back almost at the beginning. I just quit playing by the time I reached the laboratories.

    The REAL ActRaiser Rennaissance

Make no mistake: this is the game ActRaiser Rennaissance wanted to be; you've got Platforming and you've got Simulation, but each one has evolved with many of the gameplay refinements made over the years. The Simulation bits are a mashup of Real-Time Strategy, a Twin-Stick Shooter, and a little splash of the original Actraiser. The Platformer sections are like a mix of Skyblazer and Mega Man X, and you get 3 different forms, each with its own moveset that develops over time. Along the way, you'll find items to collect and challenges to complete, and these help to make your character more powerful overall. Mix in some slammin' pixel art reminiscent of the 32-bit era. and a killer soundtrack, and you have the makings of a masterpiece. Unfortunately, I had to take a star off just for general frustration. The game can be absolutely brutal at times, and while a stiff challenge is good in a game like this, Smelter takes it too far in more than just a few sections. The challenge rooms are tough, as they should be, but some are just absurd, and while the controls are generally responsive, they are not NEARLY enough so to have an even reasonable time with some of these. Even some of the regular stages are just EVIL, throwing entirely too many elements at you at once. The Real-Time Strategy bits are either super easy or absolutely relentless; there's no real pattern to it. Surprisingly, though, the bosses are very reasonable; many of them are tough, but bosses are supposed to be challenging, and most killed me far fewer than the stages that preceded them. Overall, I do recommend this to fans of ActRaiser or 2D Platformers with a fair level of complexity to them, but do be warned that it's a rough road to victory.

Good technical platformer inside a mess

The core game is good. It is also rather difficult. It's a precise/technical platformer with good level design, fun power-ups, and enjoyable boss fights. Each main stage has 3 "trials" that are quite demanding to get right. I still found all but a couple enjoyable. The trials are required to get the upper tiers of the power-up upgrades, and the upgrades are necessary to have a good time fighting the bosses. So the trials are required. Outside of the Megaman-style platforming, is an overworld light strategy/tower defense. Think of SNES Actraiser. But not as good. In the overworld you choose which direction to progress for which platforming stage to do next, select which power-ups to get for platforming, and can boost your platforming stage HP by making more soldiers. A few times in each region, you have overworld challenges to defend an outpost for a duration. And a couple times in the whole game there are overhead "shoot 'em up" stages that fall flat. The strategy and overhead layers of the game are just not as refined and polished as the platforming. You could do the game's built-in "arcade mode", but then you're skipping the interplay between the stages and overworld for the power-up progression and choice. After you complete the game, a boss rush mode is unlocked (which I did not try). Most boss fights are about pattern memorization and using the right move set and tool to survive their attacks to counter-attack. A couple of the less fun and harder bosses are more RNG-dependent on which move and pattern they do. Graphics are great (though pixel boob bounce is a bit too exaggerated), music is good (though I found myself turning it way down during trials that took a while). The writing is atrocious. The story is fine and easy to follow, but just not well-written. It's very (obviously intentionally) filled with random-sounding mishmashes of letters that resemble a word, much like a 12-year-old-author would write. But you're not here for the writing.

Mega Man Zero and Actraiser had a baby.

This game is an amazing blend of Mega Man Zero style action platformer and Actraiser. It starts out quite hard, but once you get the feel of the game down you're zipping around the stages and smashing enemies with your array of moves. The game keeps things fresh through both the platforming and town management sections, constantly opening up new areas and abilities in both to keep you engaged. There are side challenge stages inside the levels that will not only test your skills, but improve them by letting you learn how to optimaly use your arsenal in a no-stakes area. The boss fights are good too, and never feel like you win by luck. Overall a fantastic game and one of my favorite action platformers.
