Nostalgia alone is not enough. Little to nothing has been improved from technical perspective. The developers themselves confessed that they were not given enough time and resources to do a proper remaster and that's obvious. The compromises they had to make just to push the product out on schedule make the experience of playing it worse than playing the original.
As a fellow programmer I commiserate. I know how it feels to love something, to want to put your heart and soul into it but not being able to do so because you're being constrained at every step of the process.
This is my first and only one-star review on GOG to date. I can't avoid leaving it though. This software product is just unpleasant to use and sullies the memory of the one it's supposed to improve upon.
...until you find a team that truly loves games and takes the iconic classics seriously.
You don't have to look far for examples - "Grimlore Games" and "Alkimia Interactive". This is who you should be looking up to! Let these guys make a remaster or remake of the original Sacred, and you'll get the best open-world RPG in recent years.
I played that games almost since release. Sacred 1 with a group of friends, some of them had connections to the devs and found themselves buried on graveyards in Sacred 2.
I bought it again on GOG for playing it again with community patches. It was and is buggy, but it is still installed on my PCs.
I have seen about half a dozen reviews with life footage. I have read several comments on steam and here. I have been a host programmer for financial companies (nothing game related) since 1980 until about 15 years ago.
I've seen the changes. Maybe they improved some parts of the game, but worse than that is that they skipped important parts (only 3 of 5 drinks can be assigned now, fur was removed from armor and animals, targetting was made worse). This were important parts of the original game.
I don't believe in: win some, take some!
This was disappointing and nobody saw it coming? Where was QA?
Sorry, I'd rather stay with my old stuff.
BTW I bought the original about 10 years ago here for 14,09€. Considering inflation I assume I should have gotten the new version as a gift.
I've seen one guy comparing this version with his old PS3 version. It was worse than that version was and now they have to pay 30 bucks. In it's current state it's worth is less than 10% of that (in my POV).
And I don't care much about improvement pledges. It's sad that the first patch after release healed many of the crashes. Why was this patch so fast? It should have been included in the release - which would have been an automatic result after tests.
There are so many fans and veterans out there. We would have liked to test it.
Well this surprise was a bad surprise and the bad taste will linger for some time to come.
When software is 20 years and older, you don't repair it. You write it new according current rules and environment. But for that to happen you need to understand the content and intentions of the past. You need to burn to make it right!
I have the game on steam, but Sacred 1 and Sacred 2 Gold on GOG. Than this was announced, I was happy. I'm using linux and Sacred 2 Gold is a bit of a pain to get going (at least the steam-version, gog is simply "click install and play").
First the good things: it installs fine on Garuda Linux. The game starts (after a bit of tinkering with the proton-versions). Controller Support is great. My xbox360-Controller works fine, playing with controller is a welcome addition. And at this point we leave the good behind and have to look at the bad.
The game dows not use the dedicated graphics card at first. I had the game tell to use my 5070 TI, for every start of the game. The integrated Vega9 graphics is usable, but laggy.
Fighting enemies is a pain. If (and this is a very big IF) the game is in the mood of letting me fight monsters, the cursor turns from moving to fighting. You have to run away and engage the monsters several times.
Quest markers diappear after closing and opening the game.
Only 4 slots for weapons and combat arts ( I can get behind, because controller support). But why are there only 2 rows for relics? Even the old console version hat four slots.
The inventory is smaller, the items take way more space now.
You can't start in bronze difficulty and switch to silver after a few levels, you have to finish the game on bronze or start on silver.
The circles under the enemies (showing the levels of the enemies) are gone (at least in my game, a friend of mine has the circles, but no level-up-animation, which is working in my game).
You have to hover over the items in the inventory to tell the quality of the items. It is all grey.
No more "Free Play". No multiplayer lobby, multiplayer is "Invite only". At least it is better than on consoles, they have no multiplayer at all.
No trade-window (how do I trade with other players, dropping the stuff on the ground?)
You can not name your character, it is just "Seraphim, High Elf..." and for some reason your email-adress (the part before the "@") that you used to register in steam.
Items despawn after some time on the ground (like in the original), but now there is no countdown for this.
The graphics feel like a downgrade. Honestly, the original looks better in my opinion.
Do not buy this. Buy the original (or, if you can only buy the bundle), buy it and play the original. Install the community patch and have lots of fun.
