Project Warlock is a first person shooter that fans of Doom, Hexen and Wolfenstein cannot miss. It serves you an exploding cocktail of bullets, spells and monsters. In Project Warlock you battle through 60 levels of non stop action packed with bloodthirsty enemies and challenging bosses. The game offers not just firepower, but perk-based character development, weapon upgrades and unlockable spells system. This high-quality independent gem is priced to appeal to fans of polished indie titles and seekers of classic fps experience alike.
Back in April 2018 hundreds of gamers had a chance to experience an early build of Project Warlock and gave their enthusiastic feedback. The following six months the Buckshot team, with it’s showrunner Jakub Cislo, spent on polishing the game to bring you the most complete and satisfying experience. The end result is something you can check for yourself.
It is not a perfect game, but the mix of good controls, actions, classic and interesting weapons worked very well together to keep me going. The leveldesign was also distinct and interesting and i did not get lost to much, wich obthers me with other games like Boltgun were everything is grey and grey and i run in circles some times.
The progression system is a bit more modern, but fits well and i had fun making some choices, even though there was not much to do in the HUB between missions. The main progress is making it through the levels, bosses and various enemy times.
Even if the game self is very nice, after some times it becomes so ripetitive, monsters are very similar, and the "corridors" are not well characterized.
After one is death, I don't like to begin the game again.
Just a few hours into it, and I've experienced a mix of delight and frustration, with some really annoying moments.
PROs:
It's simple, fun, energetic and has the vibe of the early FPS of the early 90s.
CONs:
Vibe is the only thing it has inherited from those games. Mainly because:
- Despite what young gamers are led to believe, running and firing guns was not all those games were about. There was good level design, a diversity of situations, some puzzles and some strategy in it. Generally speaking, it was not so arcade-y as you imagine, except for maybe the very first titles like Catacomb Abyss, Wolfenstein 3D or Planet Strike. And those games have not aged well: they were a shock back them because of novelty, but now they feel terribly boring after a few minutes. No Doom, Heretic, Hexen or Duke Nukem 3D here, those games used a lot of creativity and level design work that seems lost here.
- If this game really aims at replicating the feel of those games, it must feature in-level saves and quicksaves. They were not there to damp challenge, they were there to skip frustrating backtracking and repetition, aside the fact you could have dinner, visit the loo, pork the wife, avoid a rant of your boss or sleep without losing progression. Without this BASIC FEATURE ALL 90s FPS HAD, and the fact that difficulty is kinda uneven, it feels like one of those hardcore platforms that masochistic kids like to grind for hours these days, but certainly not like any 90s game, easy or hard.
- Performance is kinda subpar. It is not well optimized and uses a lot of resources. This is the only accurate simulation of my first runs with Doom, when I tried it (I should say "dragged it") in a PC 386 16Mhz with 2Mb RAM.
Overall, not a bad game, but they need to address these issues. Good for a few runs, but not a classic -nor a good copy of the classics- at all.
If I could give a 4.5 I would. Controls are tight and responsive, music is solid, guns+ upgrades are satisfying (for the most part). Lite RPG elements and sneaky secrets add a lot of replayability.
This game is awesome and whether you buy it on sale or at full price you'll get your money's worth out of it if.
I love the guns, the level design is fun, and I loved the retro graphics. It's a really good shooter!
There really isn't too much to complain about here, except the upgrade system; that needs to be more robust. I really wish one could respec in this game, especially because some of the upgrades are quite terrible. So terrible in fact, that it would be better to leave the weapon as default rather than upgrading. Once you do upgrade, however, that's it, there's no going back or selecting the other upgrade.
The only other problem was how easily one can die from falling in some of the later levels. That was quite a pain in the butt.
Other than that, I would say this game should get a 5/5, but the problems that the game has are just a little too big to ignore. 4/5 is therefore what I said. It's good!
