Description

Twenty years after the devastating eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD, Pompeii rises from the ashes. As the head of a Roman family, you will guide the city's rebirth, shaping its future through politics, trade, and the challenges of life in the Empire.

The city may have been destroyed, but its spirit endures. Rebuild Pompeii from the ground up, balancing the needs of patricians, plebeians, and slaves, each with their own ambitions and grudges. Every street, forum, market, and aqueduct shapes not just the city, but the fortunes of your family for centuries to come.

Lead across decades, navigating the shifting tides of Roman politics. Shape laws, negotiate trade rights, and form alliances through marriage or contract. Secure favor with emperors, outwit rivals, and expand your family's influence far beyond Pompeii's walls.

Construct housing, temples, arenas, and more to meet your citizens' needs. Establish trade routes across the Empire, monitor shifting markets, and keep your economy strong. Every decision, good or bad, can echo for generations.

The game incorporates active and passive bonuses through Family Bonuses, Research and Development, and Imperial Privileges. There are two main research branches: Technology and Philosophy.

The greatest threats are not always on the battlefield. Earthquakes, fires, famine, plagues, and political sabotage can strike without warning. Some enemies will wear armor, others will smile as they shake your hand, all will test your leadership.

Great graphics & replay, but QOL issues

Played the demo back on 29-May-2025, and game has come a long way. Graphics were very good then, and they are better now; best of any city builder that I ever played. FWIW, I have an NVidia RTX 4090 with 24G VRAM, so I can play at the highest video quality. Besides the graphics, what makes this game so special? Combat is not only optional, but it plays effectively with it disabled. Also played Roman Triumph, which also had optional combat, but I could tell that turning off combat in that game was an after thought. Game play loop: Build housing for your 3 tiers of Romans: Slaves, Plebians (middle class), and Patricians (upper class). (There is a 4th tier, Senators, but they never factored into the tutorial campaign.) And provide food & goods to keep them happy. There are 2 ways to provide goods: a) Construct buildings that produce them or b) Trade for them. Supply chains are very simple (i.e. to produce glass, make sure that you mining sand); nothing like Laysara: Summit Kingdom or the Anno games. Buildings can be upgraded (at a cost), to be more productive. If you are over producing, the options are to pause production buildings and/or export the excess. Trade: This is where the game shines. There are a large # of trading locations to both buy from & sell to. Unfortunately, it takes times to gain access to each. As your trading reputation increases, more ports will offer you the option to trade with them ... for 1000 Denarii, initial cost. Besides the variety of goods, different ports may export to you cheaper than others. Similar when importing your goods. Research Trees: There are 2, which include production bonuses based on building adjacency. Game still needs some polish; good news is the developer is very responsive. There is a lengthly list of QOL issues on the Steam discussion forum ("QOL issues: Noticed these while playing the Tutorial"). (This is a trimmed down review, because of GOG limits.)

Great Roman City Builder

I've really enjoyed playing this competent and satisfying city builder. It needs just a little more polish, and it could be a classic. I suppose the closest thing to compare it to would be 'Banished', although this game rewards the player for their efforts rather than punishing them for mistakes. No 'dying of starvation while carrying boxes of fruit or fish' here ya know. It does seem to give a lot of wiggle room for early mistakes in production planning, and rewards progress with new tech/production possibilities. The visuals are great (apart from the awful weather effects), and the sound design is top notch. Panning around the city you get a great soundscape matching the activity that is going on below. There is an annoying cat at first, but he/she soon gets drowned out when things are built up :-) (Dev, please do something about that darn cat). There is a storyline to the main campaign of rebuilding Pompeii in AD 100 (21 years after the eruption). You choose a family from a choice of (currently) 4, with each one having their own buffs - e.g. I chose to play as the Julii family to get an economic boost. Other families give bonuses for e.g. agriculture or trade. There's some nice voice acting to be had (not all, but some). While the story is a little cheesy, it does give some direction early on in the game. It is also nice to have a family tree that develops in time, in a Rome TW kind of way. Two tips: Always have more slaves than needed, otherwise everything grinds to a halt in production/logistics. Secondly NEVER run out of cash, because when you hit zero cash, EVERY industry IMMEDIATELY shuts down. You can still bounce back easily with tax income, if you have enough tax paying citizens to add to the coffers (but beware, slaves do not pay tax). Other than the main campaign, there is also a sandbox option, but I've not tried that yet. That in itself makes for some replayability scope, trying out different builds. Just one crash so far (linked to the pop up visuals with the storyline), but other than that, it runs really nicely with an RTX 4090 with everything maxed. I look forward to playing some more, and hope that the dev gives it the finishing touches it needs and deserves to really make it shine.

First!

I haven't managed to play the game yet, but I am sure it is great because it requires minimum 16 GB of RAM (32GB RAM recommended). (A few moments later) And now I have even played it a bit. Runs on Intel HD laptop but is sluggish there, smooth on mobile RTX 3080. Seems to run ok also on Linux/Wine, played also on Windows 11. Then again super smooth graphics are not necessarily a must in a relaxed strategy game like this. The game introduces you to the gameplay bit by bit, which is exactly what I prefer. No tutorial needed. So far no apparent bugs or glitches.
