Everything I Want/Need...

... in a City Builder. UI Scaling, great for those of us who don't see so well anymore. Sandbox, you can change ALL of your starting conditions, enemies or no enemies and difficulty settings for them too, plus MANY other options :-). Other modes too, including a Campaign. The configuration options available, you can definitely have a tailored experience, no matter how you prefer to play. The default controls take a little getting used-to, but you can change those too. Gorgeous graphics, watching your little Pioneers living their lives, all in great detail and not just graphically, it's a busy world and is a joy to watch. In case you hadn't guessed, I LOVE this game.

Good spiritual sequel to Settlers

For fans of the classic Settlers games, this is a good spiritual sequel which scratches that itch a bit. Unfortunately, it doesn't fully replace it as the old games were traffic/logistic management games disguised as city builders and this new one handles that part weirdly. You can't get a good overview of flow of goods (and all storage places are covered so they're difficult to visually inspect as well) and housing is always in the negative (and all carriers go inside so again, difficult to visually inspect using the 3D world like you could in previous games). Also, if the previous two negative things mentioned were done for the sake of "realism", then it's quite weird that the pioneers often dig deep down and create impossibly steep roads to houses, instead of building those houses up on stilts/scaffolding which is what people always have done throughout history to keep things level.

Super fun while also a trip to the past

If all "remakes"/"spiritual sequels"/"reimaginings" were as good as this one, gaming would be in a great spot. This very clearly tried to -- and successfully does -- evoke the feeling of the classic Settlers games from Bluebyte. But it's still its own game in its own right. It evolves the gameplay with some new systems added, some weaker mechanisms tweaked or removed, and a healthy dose of modern polish. It feels good. The campaign scenarios teach well, are slow enough to learn, but fast enough that you don't get bored. You can freely use the speedup settings when you're just waiting for resources or building to complete. If you're not familiar with the genre, it's a town builder with objectives, light military skirmishing, and production chains to get the resources you need for higher tier items. But not frustratingly obtuse (too deep/too niche) production chains. It has room for improvement (e.g., there's no in-game pause at the time of this writing -- only pause by opening the system menu; and a couple of the campaign stages could use a tiny touch-up to reduce odd resource distribution)... But the game is quite polished already. The UI/UX is good, there is a good suite of options to toggle, controls are customizable and have useful defaults. The graphics are good for the genre, and more would likely detract from the experience of seeing your game state at a glance. The music is traditional for the genre (and perhaps a bit derivative; I swear 2 of the melodies I've heard in something else). The sound is great... Including, if you zoom in enough, geologists saying "yippee!" when they discover resources. Additionally, many kudos to the developers for implementing mod.io for custom map sharing rather than locking out the feature to a storefront-specific system. There is an issue with where the game puts its save files... If installed via Galaxy, it seems to put them in a Galaxy-specific location rather than in the typical user profile documents where they belong. And it's irrational that the game's manual is a high-priced paid extra.

Game is good, Multiplayer is not

I like the City Builder/Management gameplay this game uses and in general have no complaints about the game itself. (Although some missions have some needlessly tedious things, like returning the gem from the werewolf) However this game falls flat on its face with multiplayer[1]. Thankfully you can, usually[2], easily join or rejoin a game in progress because you are going to need it. My friend and I live ~3500 miles apart. Whoever is joining can be disconnected as little as ever few seconds or longer stretches up to 10-20 minutes, but you will be disconnected. And if you don't disconnect, you can be removed from the game for having a different game state. This game desperately needs a more fault tolerant multiplayer code that tries harder to maintain a connection. And someone joining should never get disconnected for having a different game state, their state should just get overwritten. We play dozens of direct connect games together and never have connection issues like this game does. Even old games, such as original Baldur's Gate 1&2 (pre-EE), are stable. [1] This game requires GoG Galaxy running for Multiplayer to work. If you are on Linux, I'd suggest Heroic Games Launcher ,ge-proton-latest with umu disabled, since it can handle running the needed parts of GoG for multiplayer without needing to run Galaxy. [2] The game can sometimes get stuck loading on the person joining. The host will need to kick them and the joiner restart their client. If you don't do both then the host will need to restart their game for that person to join again.

The settlers... but better

It's basically the mechanics of settlers series, but with lots of improvements, making the game much more fun :)
