It's time to revisit purgatory. One man against the Underworld, wielding the most demented arsenal ever to grace a shooter.

The speed, the carnage and that unmistakable atmosphere: this is the cult classic that defined an era, now rebuilt from the ground up for modern RTX hardware.

Painkiller RTX uses NVIDIA RTX Remix with full-scene path tracing, rebuilt physically based rendering (PBR) materials, volumetric lighting and RTX Skin subsurface scattering to bring one of the most distinctive shooters ever made into stunning new light.

Developed by Merry Pencil Studios, awarded Best Overall in NVIDIA's 2025 RTX Remix Mod Contest.

What's been overhauled:

  • Full-scene path tracing with dynamic shadows and reflections
  • Thousands of legacy textures rebuilt as PBR materials
  • Hand-crafted lighting shaped to preserve Painkiller's signature atmosphere
  • Volumetric lighting bringing depth and drama to iconic environments
  • RTX Skin subsurface scattering on characters and surfaces

Please note: RTX Remix Painkiller is an ongoing work in progress covering chapters 1, 2 and 3 of the game.

Beautiful work

This so very niche game is very lucky to receive such a treatment and become a spotlight some 20 years after its' initial release. Still can't quite wrap my head around the fact how a game that was made next door from where I was born caught your attention and inspired this labor of love of a project. Keep it up and good luck with future endeavours!

Finally being able to try this

This is a tremendous achievement despite the work in progress state - having knowledge from Pain Engine modding myself further amplifies this fact - and it seems to shape up pretty nicely as time passes. Even on a relatively low end setup I could squeeze out a satisfactory visual + fps combo, so if someone is having issues they need to tweak the extensive settings that is clearly presented to the player on launch. Others saying this not looking impressive/different enough either have to have their eyes checked, or they accidentally launched the vanilla version (which regrettably happened to me on first startup as well, could have been an issue with GoG Galaxy itself). I will keep an eye on the updates from now, and it's great to see it appear on this platform after other fan favourites like Jazz Jackrabbit 2+. For the completely negligible price the base game costs these days + this being a completely fan-made free addition it could be considered a steal in this quality. Nothing but the best for the devs for the future, and a well deserved award!

A great time to revisit a classic.

This is Painkiller. If you know, you know. If you don't, Painkiller is a shooter bathed in blood and damnation. Think Quake 3, but single player, and set in settings absolutely radiant with evil. Blast your way through hordes of undead with ever more destructive weapons, in settings that many other games seemed afraid to go. Churches, Cemetaries, Crosses, Pentagrams. Actual "christian" mythology used in interesing ways. This RTX version runs great with my 4070 at 1440p with all settings maxed. Let the shader cache finish before signing the pact, and bask in the demonic glow that is Painkiller RTX. And when you're done, check out the rest of the series, including Hell and Damnation, and see how far we've come. :)

The best RTX Remix that OG deserves

Original Painkiller is a one of the last Doom-Quake era FPS came out in 2004, it’s arguably the one of the absolute classics that any FPS enthusiast should experience at least once. This mod is faithful remaster of the classic created with Nvidia’s proprietary RTX Remix tool. As such, this is not a total reimplementation like Hell & Damnation released in 2013. All the original gameplay logics and feels from Pain engine and early Havok physics engine are perfectly preserved, but now with path tracing and PBR!! Honestly, I feel most of these ray trace/path trace mods tend to lean into make-everything-shinier side, this mod excels at improving the general fidelity while preserving the original materials art direction. As far as I can see, PBR materials used in the rebuilt textures are all spot on. Shinier stuff like marbles stand out, but I appreciate more subtle matte surfaces like chromes as they gleam dully. The original was well lit but depicted in very flat lighting all around (technical limitation of the time, still artistically good looking nonetheless), so RTX might feel drastically different in some maps, like Cathedral or Atrium Complex due to shininess of PBR materials. But it doesn’t feel like shiny for sake of shininess, it still feel totally appropriate depiction for the world of mystical purgatory, and I think it’s a testament to the mod team’s dedication and respect to original materials. Additionally, as a little QoL, the mod seems to come with proper HOR+ widescreen support. Other than that, it plays as it originally intended, no modifications to gameplay wise. One complaint I must point out is that, this is only for Nvidia RTX users, no one else. You can try to play with AMD (or Intel) GPU, but realistically, without DLSS capabilities, you probably struggle to maintain comfortable frame rate. Even if you have RTX, you’ll need at least high-mid model, preferably 4070 series or newer to crack 100 fps with high setting. I understand that it’s unavoidable nature of RTX Remix mods, but I thought it’s unfortunate that such a wonderful mod can only be appreciated by select few. This is a really great way to replay the old classic, it’s essentially the visual remaster of original game with no change in gameplay, as any remaster should be. It’s free, so if you have the capable hardware, there is no reason not to try this excellent mod.

One of the best RTX reworks made!

Been playing it recently, and it's marvelous to reexperience the game. Can't wait for the multiplayer maps, if it's still a work in progress.
