What A Beautiful Game!

I heard a lot of good things about this game and saw a trailer for it during The Game Awards. I am really glad this game got a GOG release so I can finally try it. I am amaze on the art style and designs. It is beautifully crafted and when playing I would something just pause and take in the scenery before continuing. The game is short and can be beaten in 1-2 sittings. I believe it took me around 4-5 hours to beat the game. It will be longer if you decide to find all the secrets. I also play and beat the prologue after the main game and that took somewhere between 1-1.5 hours. The game ran well on Windows 10 and I experience no crashes. The combat is serviceable, the controls are responsive and I played using mouse & keyboard. The puzzle and platforming were intuitive at least for me. I did not get stuck doing them and it did not take me long to figure out the solution for every one of them. They are pretty simple and straightforward. The game is pretty casual to semi-casual and some fights took me a few tries. The bosses weren't too hard, I did like the final boss for the main game and in the prologue. The developers also included a story mode difficulty where you won't die and can just enjoy it casually for the story. I had a really great experience overall with the game. The only problem was it is pretty short. If you are a gamer that is looking to get the most out of your money then I would wait until this game is $5-10 range and I would recommend to get the prologue as well. Even though it is 1-1.5 hours, it introduces new things not seen in the main game and is beautifully crafted as well.

A bit lackluster

I've played Gris previously and expected Neva to be pretty similar and Neva could pretty much be described as Gris with combat. You play as a young woman who befriends a wolf-like creature while being attacked by dark forces (ie. dark blobs that kinda look like No-Face from the acclaimed movie "Spirited Away"). What then follows is a 2D platforming game with pretty music and frequent combat situations against the mentioned dark forces. Fighting enemies in Neva is a simple yet somewhat challenging affair consisting of button-mashing the attack button and constant dodging to evade attacks. It's okay but not very exciting but towards the end of the game, it becomes slightly tougher and more varied - but for me personally it felt like a classic case of "too little, too late". Neva is a very standard "artsy-fartsy"-game with a vague plot about love/death/acceptance or something - I don't know, I've played too many similar titles and to me personally, that schtick feels a bit old. Neva is absolutely well made but it's hard to be excited about an experience that you feel like you had a thousand times before. Although short (it took me less than four hours to play through) I needed a dozen sessions to see it through simply because I got bored with the game so often. Still, if you are a major Gris fan, it might be a good recommendation.

Neva is one of those games that proves to even the most stubbornly ignorant out there that video games can be a form of art.
