Faithful Remake

Old Master of magic fan here ^^ The remake has really nice graphics & the rules are mostly the same as the original. You can still freely create your own wizard, combining books of various fields of magic and specific traits. There is also a plethora of staple races to choose from: barbarians, trolls, draconians, elves, halflings, klackon etc. However, there are also some subtle changes: Hex instead of square fields, including combat, is the most obvious one. This will undoubtly influence balancing, but I didn't delve deeply enough into the game yet to say how much. Remaking a game 1:1 of course has advantages and disadvantages. The original game *was* unbalanced and there *are* OP combinations of units or traits. But playing with them is fun. My only gripe is that multiplayer is missing. Since I'm not very happy with the current installments of civilization, master of magic could be an alternative if a DLC or addon would offer a multiplayer mode.

A very respectful remake

For decades now, the original Master of Magic has been the first game I install on any new computer. No other games in the 4x genre come close to doing all the things that Master of Magic did. Finally, there's a game that lives up. If you haven't played the original, and you have any sort of interest in 4x games (like Civilization), I think you'll be impressed with this game. There's so much room for replaying this game. You can do a dozen different games with Life magic (which is a good place to start), playing as different races and trying different strategies. Then, when you've the hang of that, you can switch over to Chaos magic and you'll have to come up with entirely new strategies to deal with enemies you thought were simple before. If you've played the original, I think you'll be surprised not only at how faithful they were to the original, but at how well those mechanics hold up so many years later. There are some updates, and some quality of life improvements (like build queues), but overall this game still feels like a prettier version of the original. The biggest improvement, in my opinion, is in all of the different starting options available. You can set the difficulty separately for enemy wizards, neutral towns, and for lairs. You can set the map size larger or smaller, to allow you more space to prepare before running into enemies, or to force yourself to fight over every scrap of land. You have a lot of room to play the game in the way that's most interesting to you, and to play slightly differently every time.

New Skin for the Old Ceremony

I posted a hasty review here after playing for about twelve hours. Now that I've played for many more hours, completed a few games, and bought all the DLC, I have to revise my review and up the rating I gave this game. Btw, I borrowed the title from an album by Leonard Cohen. It seems to fit here. I started playing the original Master of Magic when it was new, in the mid-1990s. It kept me up late many a night and was one of my favorite games for years. I only stopped playing because of my lag in keeping up with technology. And by the time DOSBox made MoM available again, it showed its age; it looked and felt kind of clunky and old-fashioned. I'd also grown used to faster-paced games, so MoM felt painfully slow. From what I've read, that was what a lot of gamers experienced. Seravy made a brave attempt to bring MoM into the modern world with Caster of Magic, and it's cool to play that faster-paced, debugged, fleshed-out version of MoM with a diplomacy system that actually works (the original is more or less broken). But I found it hard to get into a game that looks like MoM but isn't quite. I grabbed Slitherine's 2022 version on release day. My wife and I had both been into the game, and we were both eager to revisit it. Unfortunately, we found it too slow. For her, it was slow just because she had grown used to faster-paced games. For me, it literally ran much too slowly on my slightly outdated laptop. Thus, I had to let the game sit until I upgraded my hardware. With all those obstacles behind me, and having gotten back into playing MoM, I'm now very impressed with this remake. The original game is still there and very much alive, under the new skin. The joy I experienced in the 1990s is back again. And the game looks and sounds and plays better than it ever did. An old-timer like me can stick to the basic "vanilla" game and get immersed in a nostalgic trip. Yet MoM '22 offers more: new random-event choices, new races, new skills. And diplomacy works too. It's not a groundbreaking diplomacy system, but it works well enough for trading and staying on good terms with some rival wizards while fighting others. There are also setup options that can speed up the game--especially the early part, where there's not much you can do. But I find myself enjoying the game without those options. The slow start is welcome in a way; it lends the game an epic feel, since you have to build up your empire over time. For those new to MoM, it's a 4X TBS strategy game with a big box of fantasy-themed toys thrown in. The gaming experience is an exercise in creativity, beginning with your choice of unique standard wizards or customizing a wizard of your own. The mix of skills and spell books can give each playthrough a different feel. And for those who've been disappointed with the tedium of "playing wide" in a strategy game like this (gradually painting the map your color), the Spell of Mastery offers a "playing tall" option: You can win simply by researching and casting that spell. Of course, it takes a lot of preparation. Among the games inspired by MoM are Age of Wonders, Fallen Enchantress, and Endless Legend. All fine games. But now that this MoM remake is available, we have another top-notch choice. For me, there's nothing quite like MoM; it's the root of all the rest and still an excellent game in its own right. For anyone new to the game, I'd say it's well worth spending some time with. No comment on the purchasable DLC, as I haven't tried it yet. Bought it, though, just to make sure it's there when I'm ready for it. The free DLC, "Through the Myrror," meshes nicely into the game, IMO, spicing up MoM with a few new races and stock wizards. Cool stuff. Bottom line: MoM '22 has become my go-to version of the game. I don't see myself revisiting the "old MoM" in any of its forms. For me, this one's the real deal.

As close to the original as possible

I have played the original countless of hours and loved it (especially Warrax - you will always be close to my heart <3). I am really impressed. I was a bit worried about the new environment and the hex-fields, but these fears were unnecessary. From the first few moments on there was the feeling of the old days. You will find your way immediately. Even the hex grids did not make that much impact as you may think. There is only one minor downside: The music is not the same as in the original. Master of Magics soundtrack was outstanding and the new one is good, but it damps the feeling a little bit. Nevertheless everything else is as close to the original as one can wish. Even the artifacts and their generation is the same. You can also create your own wizard like in the old days. Great remake for a good price (in my opinion it is worth the money).

Original MoM Fan here Worth it!

Okay, am a big fan of MoM since it was on floppy... I have played oh so many hours of the Original and I crank it up from time to time as well. This one is a mostly faithful remake. Like the good old days I actually read through the manual for the nostalgia. The remake manual is not a good as the Original but it does do a good job as a manual. It's MoM, it's updated and for better or worse, I like this version just fine and think most hardcore fans should be able to enjoy it plenty. Now... why only 4 Stars? Well, there are various issues that nag at me with the game. City Scape is not your default view while in city and as far as I know you can't make it default. Game seems to run only 1 or 2 threads... I have 16 cores so bummer there I guess. There are some other Quality of Life items like after creating a settler your entire army gets auto selected even if they are 'garrisoned' and some 1 movement unit will drag your settler down if they go with them. The other is the camera dragging. I really hate the auto focusing that keeping yoinking the camera everywhere. Would prefer it to be a little more controllable. Otherwise... a mostly faithful remake and I am not sad at all that I busted $40 smacks on this game!
