Charming Souls/Zelda-like
More of a 3.5 stars.
QUICK LIST:
PROS:
-Gorgeous game.
-Combat has deceptively more depth than it first appears.
-The puzzles are also similarly deeper than they first appear, and some are downright devious. There's quite a few of them, too.
-You are WELL rewarded for exploration. There's always something to find squirrelled away somewhere. A lot of the more valuable upgrades are well hidden.
-Decent enemy variety that gains new moves as you advance in the game, so certain enemy types get refreshed just as they are getting stale.
-If you love the difficulty, higher difficulty modes and challenges award some pretty crazy gear.
CONS:
-Don't bother playing this game if you have a weaker PC. It will run, but something about the game's lighting makes this game helluva ugly at lower resolutions and FPS.
-DON'T SKIP THE TUTORIALS! There are some enemies and bosses that simply can't be beaten if you don't use specific techniques. If you don't know about them, or forget they're an option, then some bosses become impossible to beat.
-The difficulty of some bosses is dependent on sheer, raw damage output and sneaky tricks rather than complex movesets. It's not too difficult but the difficulty spikes can be pretty jarring at times and you may find yourself needing to look up a guide to beat some bosses.
-If you don't REALLY love the combat, all of the combat challenges and higher difficulty modes and bonus gear will just feel like a massive barrier blocking you from gear you really need.
-Similarly to the above, if you're not REALLY loving the puzzles, then doing them for critical upgrades can feel soul crushing after a while and there are FAR more puzzles than combat challenges in this game.
-While a lot of upgrades and gear are hidden behind puzzles, the majority of stuff you get for solving puzzles is just cosmetics.
-By far and away the toughest puzzle in the game is a MANDATORY challenge you must complete to beat the game. It comes towards the end. And it's one of those kinds of puzzles where just knowing the solution isn't enough to beat it.
-The final boss has more phases than any boss in the history of Dark Souls and is a serious test of your patience and resource management more than raw skill. And it's a time sink fight, requiring you to wait for opportunities, so there is no way to rush it. It's incredibly frustrating.
-Combat variety comes more from mixing in spells you learn into combat rather than a large roster of weapon types of which there are only a few. It's fun and all, but this is less stylish combos and more well timed dodges and placed spells. If you're one of those super elite Devil May Cry type players, this game may feel redundant and tedious in comparison.
