VN with fun shoot-em-up elements

At full price, this is a little on the expensive side when considering its relatively short gameplay length, so deduct a star if full price. But when half price on sale (as it was for me), I thought the five stars was earned. This is 80% visual novel and 20% shoot-em-up (Shmup). Positives: Nice writing with good characters, interesting story, lovely music, and the Shmup is well integrated into the story, rather than being a random add-on as I've seen in some other games. The Shmup is not as sophisticated as a specialised Shmup (it's no Jets-n-Guns), but is fun to play with good variety of power-ups and two different ships. Graphical elements are nicely done. However, what almost made this a 4 star review, was the limited range of art assets. The art it did have was nicely done, but it tended to reuse the same scenes with limited character poses/variations. An occasional gallery image was unlocked as the story progressed, but as most of the time is spent in dialogue with the main character models, I feel like this was a missed opportunity . Also, I think the different endings were perhaps not as varied and developed as they could have been - tending to rely upon just one or two key decisions. That said, the game has heart, and if you like a VN with a bit of romance and a good portion of action, I think this might be your cup of tea.

It's not a shoot-'em-up

I bought this because it was advertised as a mix of shooter and visual novel, and it sounded weird and different. I've played for over half an hour and the only bit of shooting was a very simple tutorial that I really didn't need or want. I found it disappointing. I wanted the mix of genres, not a faint dusting of shoot-'em-up on a visual novel.

If you like Visual Novels and Shooters, this is a treat, both aspects are very well made.

Above average and solid

EDIT: I just changed "graphic novel" to "visual novel". I mean, they are the same thing, but technically, no they are not... Ok, so lets get this out of the way, I've not finished the game, but I've played enough I feel I can give a fair general assessment. I can't really judge the story as a whole, but here are my thoughts after spending several housrs with it. This is a visual novel first and foremost. So if you are really not into that, it might be a deal breaker. You could just skip it all I suppose, that is an option in the game. The art is pretty fantastic, and the story itself is kind of strange in a cool way, classic "only in Japan" kind of stuff (for the record, I don't know who made this). There is a level of horny to it, but it's reasonably mild so far and I very much doubt it gets too raunchy. This is on the level of something like, Love Hina, maybe a little "worse" than that. So, realitvly safe, but not totally innocent either. It maybe classified as an "adult" game, but if you are buying this to actually wank too... you know what, go ahead. You do that and stick to this kind of thing for as long as you can. Anyway, I have a lot less to say about the shmup portion of the game. It's side scrolling and it's competant. Not the best one I've ever played, but collecting power ups does just feel good and that's one of the main things for such a game. IF you like visual novels and you like side scrolling shoot em ups, I mean, you can do a lot worse in both departments. For what it is, it's pretty good. It is however, not for everyone.
