Disappointing Waste of Dev Talent
Unreasonably difficult even at the novice difficulty setting for multiple campaigns. There are so many pointless mechanics introduced, such as mobile units without heroes to lead them, inventories for creatures (they can hold but can't use,) and Heroes being forced to take up a slot in an army. Combat is about as boring and grindy as it was in Heroes 3 and the switch from 2 D combat to isometric combat makes it feel even worse somehow. Graphics have aged worse than just about every Heroes of Might and magic game that came before it. Castle building is stremlined (which is nice,) but then it's utterly ruined by how throttled it is. In Heroes 3 castle building and upkeep was very intutive and it took more time and effort to build up towards a lategame stronghold, with most buildings being worth constructing. In Heroes 4 however, most builidngs options are limited, there are no creature upgrades, and the domininant strategy is to just ignore all other buildings until you unlock the late game creature generator buildings. Only nice things I can say is the writing is pretty good (Half Dead's story is particularly engaging), it's easier to read creature stats, the caravan system is great, and creature producers generate creatures regularly without having population booms limited to the first day of every week.
