Welcome to the Colony

The Kingdom of Myrtana has been invaded by a relentless horde of orcs. Desperate for powerful weapons to repel them, King Rhobar II orders the mining of vast quantities of magical ore, setting every available prisoner to work in the Khorinis mines. To ensure no one escapes, the King commands his most skilled mages to erect a magical barrier. But something goes terribly wrong, and the magic spirals out of control, trapping everyone inside. The prisoners rebel, transforming the mine into a lawless territory ruled by the Colony’s most brutal inmates.

Now, the King must negotiate with these new rulers, as tensions rise among the mine's factions. Amidst the chaos, the arrival of an unknown prisoner will change everything…

A rough gem of a remake/remaster

Old school Gothic fan here. The original was my first RPG back in 2001, so it holds a special place in my heart (and i still finish it once a year). Graphics: + Great & faithful graphical update of the old mine valley + Animations are fine (and better when compared to games like the Oblivion Remaster for example) + Redesign of creatures is mostly good (too bad the iconic scavengers look so different now) - It doesn't belong in the top tier of good looking UE5 games - Performance could be better. - Character faces could be more unique. Sound: + Sound design is okay, nothing too remarkable. Some original (monster) sounds are still there, others are unfortunately missing. - Sounds are missing/not playing at times - BAD VOICE ACTING (German version)!!! The original had way better, more unique/remarkable and more fitting voice actors... and the player's voice actor is especially bad (yelling, out of breath, very little acting) in this one. Music: + Kai Rosenkranz delivered a great updated score, staying faithful to the original, although the original music had its very own contemporary charm to it Plot: + Faithful to the original, but expanded here and there. Nothing too different, so it seems rather like a mix between a remake and remaster - GAME BREAKING BUGS are hindering important quest progression at times (-> Old Camp, become a guard for example was not possible, because Kirgo wouldnt talk to you) Gameplay: + It's what you expect from a gothic game, it's fairly modern but of course could be better. + climbing & riding are good new additions - movement and fighting gameplay is a bit sluggish - lockpicking minigame gets very annoying & old very fast...especially since you very often solve hard locks just to find worthless clutter inside a chest - the inventory is... weird. No sorting options. Overall: As a remake it is mostly good, seems more like a remaster. It's certainly not a masterpiece though. It recreates faithfully the atmosphere that every Gothic fan loved, visually and music wise. It expands upon the world and quests in a very nice way. The voice acting could've been much better and soft-locking quest bugs ruin the fun. But all aspects (except the music) are a bit rough and could be improved. Recommendation: WAIT, after a few months of bug fixing and once the MODDING COMMUNITY gets going, this game will turn into a real gem.

No markers or yellow paint. Only man.

I am Andrew Ryan, and I'm here to ask you a question: Is a man not entitled to the sweat of his brow? "No!" says the quest marker, it belongs to the impatient. "No!" says the in-game GPS, it belongs to the blind. "No!" says the witcher sense, it belongs to the stupid. I rejected those answers. Instead, I chose something different. I chose the impossible. I chose... Gothic.

It's not the same but it feels the same

The game is fathful recreation of Gothic original with extra on top. The atmosphere is basically one to one only with modern upgrades. Controlls are different but good. There's exatra content and differences that add to the game without harming it. At least that's my opinion after finishing first chapter. Performance or bug issues are minimal and while I have a strong PC, it is not the top, R7 7800X3D/RX 9070 XT, I can play on high, 4K with quality upscaling. Still, 8GB VRAM cards are not going to run this above 1080p. Edit: After finishing the game as a mage I can safely say that for me this game is an upgrade in almost all ways. Will this please everyone of the old fans? No. Some are upset because the old exploits can no longer be used, the economy works different, while others will be upset because things are a little more approachable. Then there are some who hate the lockpicking while others love it. I can say the remake met and exceeded my expectations. However there is a more amount of bugs and some potential quest breaking issues later in the game if you don't follow specific direction, so I would recommend to wait a month of two for the patches to roll out before playing.

A remake worth buying

I've only been playing this for 3 hours, but it is clearly a masterpiece. Graphics: this is how I always imagined the world of Gothic - Now the game is able to render it (with the proper hardware). Sounds have also been re-recorded (and the music re-orchestrated) for total immersion. Even if you know every nook and cranny, you'll be surprised as a few characters can also be found in places other than they used to be in the original (depending on the time of day). Same goes for the quests. It should be noted that the difficulty, even on the lowest setting, is significantly greater than the challenge offered by the old Gothic 1: a single adult scavenger can off your level 2-3 character in 2 hits if you're not careful enough, so be sure to time your attacks appropriately. Also, stealing has its consequences as opposed to OG1 where you could just pocket almost everything, so mind your hands to avoid a beating (or worse). Cons: a few character models look and behave a bit clunky. Rig: Ryzen 7 5700, 32 DDR4-3600, RTX 5060. Very high graphics settings across the board. Since the game's only been out for 3,5 hours, I'll keep playing - ask me if you want to know anything else.

Good title, though more of a sidegrade.

For those wanting a TLDR, the remake is a side-grade at the end of the day. Old frustrations replaced with new ones. Though if you're a new player, just buy the original, it's cheaper. You can get a good fan patch to get most of the bad bugs and crashes fixed. The rest of the review is just me ranting, don't expect anything professional. I can say that I prefer MOST of the mechanics of the remake to the original gothic, and you *can* mine the ore now for actual or but... Also, some of the mechanics I think are overkill. They really hamstring you with economy, the more you sell an item to a merchant the less they'll pay which makes things... A lot worse in my opinion. I'm constantly strapped for cash. The lockpicking minigame is at least *there,* but it is honestly one of the worse. Though, apparently if you train lockpicking it gets better, which makes that a worthwhile investment now. I read it was done that way to make the player feel as clueless and frustrated as an amateur picking a lock for the first time, which really fits Gothic's vibe as a whole in needing to train up to get functionality so I can't give it too many negative points for that. It just really sucks that the economy is so shafted, it makes me feel like getting the upgrades for skinning creatures no longer will pay itself back. The other thing is the graphics, which I do think undercut a lot of the game's original design. It feels visually cluttered compared to the simplistic yet effective old game, yet maintains the style of the old map still somehow just in a different way. It's a faithful recreation completely, the combat even feels incredibly clunky until you train and get more skillpoints in it. So... I'd say the remake is worth it, but more probably on sale and specifically for fans of the old series. The voice acting is changed to be more cinematic but something about the old game's ridiculousness had its own charm. They also over dramatize things sometimes, and act a little more passive where over dramatization was needed. Yet, your main character doesn't sound like a text-to-speech reading so that's a big win for it at the end of the day. I haven't completed the story yet, and if there's any horrible revelations I will edit this review in the future. But overall, yeah pick it up if you like gothic.
