FINAL FANTASY VIII - REMASTERED
Players' stories
This was my first Final Fantasy game and is still one of my favorite games of all time. Sure, I can emulate the PS1 version of the game using backups of my game discs, but it would be nice to have this HD-ified version available from GoG with achievements, built-in cloud saving, etc.
Buy the original version and up it with mods, that give you an better gaming experience then the remaster. Love the game, was my first final fantasy too, i believe.

My favorite game, but awful remaster

For me, Final Fantasy VIII is the greatest game of all time and the best Final Fantasy game. It does basically everything right (there are some cons but they are a minority). It has an unique and till this day still one of the best JRPG role-playing system which allows players to put magic into the characters' statistics. This system is very open, flexible and provides tons of "builds" that can be created. However we are talking about a JRPG here so do not expect classes. The story is phenomenal. A military school drama with a heavy emphasis on love and friendship. Yeah, sometimes it is a bit naive, but it must be as the main characters are just high school students. The story is twisted, there are a lot of surprises and unexpected revelations, etc etc. This just from the golden era of JRPG so expect a breathtaking narrative. We have a great story, great characters and great RPG system. So lets talk about the best mini game ever made for a video game - Triple Triad. This card game is easy to learn but hard to master. It is so intuitive but yet so deep it even got its own version in Final Fantasy XIV Online. There are different rules of the minigame that are spread throughout the regions of the world and you can directly influence their spreading to other regions. The card can be used to create items, magic, etc however first you need a special skill to do it. Such skills can be unlocked via GF, huge summoning beings that can also level up and even bond with them. The closer bond, the faster you can summon them in battle. Graphics-wise (PS1 version) the game is basically the most beautiful game on the system. Amazingly looking spells, breathtakingly detailed backgrounds, grandiose GF animations. A perfection. The soundtrack is one of the most experimental by Uematsu and altogether one of his best. Tons of unforgettable melodies, amazing compositions and lovely tunes. But all of this above applies on the PS1 version. The remaster is horrible. First of all, the original prerendered backgrounds only were "enhanced" with a Gaussian blur. Here they are completely blurry and lost the vast majority of details. Next, the framerate remains the same which means that outside battles it is 30 fps, during battles 15 fps. Yes, 15 fps! There is no mouse support. Yes, the OG PC version did not support mouse either, but this is a remaster, so I really expected it. The graphics are bad, the framerate is bad. The worst crime is the change of the main characters faces - Squall and Rinoa. Instead of making them based on the FMVs or various renders you have certainly seen somewhere, they based them on their appearance in Dissidia Final Fantasy. Why? No idea. All the main characters have their models and faces remade, but except Squall and Rinoa their changes were based on the FMVs. But when it comes to Squall and Rinoa, the most important characters in the entire game, they just - for no reason - decided to change their faces completely so they look totally different compared to FMVs that often appear during the game. Why? Why? I do not understand. What a garbage.

The non-remastered version is better

It is a real shame that GOG didn't get the non-remastered version. And this is for two reasons. One is that the remastered version is only a visual enhancement and a poor one at that. It has the FFX remastered problem where overly detailed textures are stuck on unexpressive models. To me, the characters looks like unflinching puppets. Other people also brought up the strange fact that Squall and Rinoa are modeled after their Dissidia version which I agree was ill-adviced. The backgrounds are surprisingly blurrier for no reason. They also updated the card graphics, sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worst. An exemple for the worst is for the Angelo card. Before it was just his face. Now it is his full body, but his face is hidden by the card stats. The original Eidos port have plenty of issues that needed fixing, but none are addressed by the rematered version making it overall very poor. The second reason is for the Succession Mod. This mod is only available to the non-remastered version. It is a mod that update what is the weakess part of VIII which is the dialog. This mod is so good that I would recommend it for the first playthrough. The original script is boring, rigid and information/fluff poor. Fret not, the Succession Mod keeps the character as is, but makes them more emotionnaly intelligent by being more implicit. And is more information rich by saying tuck away information like the GF junctionning system being invented by Cid Kramer or Selphie being a mechanic. Another big exemple of script improvement is that no one has amenesia in the Succession version, something everyone agree is dumb. The mod actually salvage the big orphenage flashback scene by being a rallying moment for the characters instead of being revelation/twist heavy. They made the impossible true by transforming the worst scene in the game into a scene I actually love now. Originally, I had enough of the story during early disc 2. Now the rushed second half of disc 3 takes the cake. Also, correct me if I am wrong, but FFNx seems to not be compatible for this version? In conclusion, can we get the non-remastered version please?

It's Final Fantasy 8, on GOG!

Bought this instantly after seeing the announcement about it being released here along with four other Final Fantasy titles! I prefer to own the games that I buy, and this one here is my all-time favorite! So far it works perfectly fine out of the box on Windows 11. This release supports modern Controllers' I'm using the PlayStation 5 Dualsense (works Wired and Wireless). The game is part of the GOG Preservation Program! If you've held off buying the PC version because of DRM platforms, then wait no more, I recommend this version on GOG, own it forever.

From Loner to Love Story

FFVIII has always been my favorite Final Fantasy, mainly because it commits to its tone and its love story. You start out as a guarded loner who avoids vulnerability, and over time you really feel yourself open up especially through your romance with Rinoa, which is a central part of the game’s arc. The Remastered version is also a great way to replay it today: you get modern QoL options like 3x speed, Battle Assist, and the ability to turn random encounters off, which makes replays much smoother without changing what FFVIII is. And on GOG, the biggest win is simple: it’s DRM-free
