FINAL FANTASY VII
Players' stories
Would love a proper PS1 decompiled port. The steam version is a terrible incomplete pc port that looks bad and has a ton of bugs and incomplete assets. Seeing the original version from the PS1 properly ported and remastered on PC would be incredible.
I would love to see this game on GOG because for me it is the one that got away. It is the first Final Fantasy game I ever played and I did it on the PS 1, as I did not have a PC then. I was close to finishing it when my nephew erased my memory card. I started it again a little while later as I was pissed off. I made it to the second disc of my second playthrough when that same memory card was borrowed/taken by the same nephew and I never saw it again. On the third and final time I attempted the game I made through disc one and then I sold the system and made the move to PC. I would love a chance at redemption. Please, don't forget the soundtrack and other goodies if possible. Hopefully, GOG wont stop there and other Final Fantasy/Square Enix games will follow.
I would like this game on GOG so we'd have a version *without* the silly antiquated online login of the Steam version that effectively locks you out of your own game when there's a sale and there's too much people trying to get in. It's FF7. It's single player. Please. Japanese version would be appreciated, too.

You did it. You really did it

This game was what made me buy a PSX in the 90s and I've waited for years it being launched here so when I received your mail announcing it's release here it was an insta-buy. I'll update my review when I get to play it, but kudos to GoG for bringing FFVII here. - Ok I've been playing for a few hours and could compare it with the 2013 Steam version, the new Steam version (I wish I could say that with my own Psx version too but although I still have the discs and the console, I don't have an old tv to wire it to). Pros: - Drm free (it's not true it opens Steam as I've read here) - It's FFVII in GoG - The gameplay is as ever Cons: - Stutters in the fmv's - The prerendered backgrounds got blurrier than the Steam2013 version - The game weights way more (from 1,43Gb to 3,46Gb) - The translations are the old ones. At least the spanish one is (and it's wonky at best, now I'm gonna give a go to the english translation) So I'm lowering my rating to 4/5 and waiting for a future patch fixing this few things. Still a great game and a highly recommended purchase.

great game, low effort port

While I am happy to see it on GOG, finally, I am quite disappointed by the lack of graphical options for the game. There are no options to disable the filtering on the backgrounds, and every other texture that has transparency looks quite terrible now, and so does the font. I wish i could turn off most of these so called "enhancements".

Great features, works out of the box

Here's my first impressions, tested on both Windows 10 and Linux Cachy OS via Heroic Games Launcher. I grew up on the original PS1 release, for context. Seems like this was ported by DotEmu, which is good in my book. Presentation: looks fantastic, but no widescreen or ultrawide. Game automatically started in 1080p with borderless fullscreen enabled. Runs solid 60fps. Sound: Pretty much just like I remembered, there are some very minor sound imperfections, music sounds fantastic. Controls: Plays great on kb/m and controller. I prefer controller, it has some nice QOL. For example, the analogue stick will make you walk if you press it a little bit, and if move the stick to the edge the character will run without needing to hold O. Uses Xbox controller prompts. Did not see any for KB/M. Game boosts (cheats): Speed up the battles by 3x speed, get instant HP/MP/Limit Break, turn off random encounters. Didn't see any others but these are welcome additions. Translation (so far) appears to be the PS1 original. Game has an OPTIONAL launcher that is only used for settings, you DO NOT have to sign into a Square Enix account like the very old release used to require (THANK YOU!) Game seems to have an auto-save feature, but I am not sure how to use it and I am not sure if the game was utilizing it. This could be patched later on I suppose, but for now I recommend relying on the in-game save points to be safe. Some of the menus have strange translations. For example, some options you can set to "available" or "selected." Not sure what either means, could use a touch up, imo. Performance: No performance hitches, ran on an Nvidia RTX 3060 on Windows 10, and it ran perfect even on my very old laptop which uses Linux Cachy OS and an Intel UHD 620 integrated card. Rock solid 60fps on both machines. Overall, very happy with this release. I am yet to test mods, but I am sure mod support will happen in the future. FF7 modding is still VERY active. Keep up the great work, SE! FF Pixel remasters next, along with anything Dragon Quest, pretty please and thank you!

Forced blur filter, graphics look awful

What a colossal disappointment. This version of the game is not the 2012 PC release that still had the prerendered backgrounds unfiltered and intact. Instead, this version applies a smeary bilinear filter to everything except for the characters and enemies, which turns all of the environments into a blurry mess and doesn't mesh at all with the high-resolution character models. This wasn't the case with the original 1998 PC release, nor the more recent 2012 one that was available on PC up until this version launched. This version also introduces stuttering FMVs and a number of sound bugs. It all makes sense once you load the game and see the DotEmu logo appear - it's their typical F-tier re-release work that we've come to expect. I love Final Fantasy VII, but there is absolutely no reason why we should have been saddled with a downgraded, inarguably inferior version of the game. Poor form, Square-Enix.

Nearly botched my final exam in 1997 ...

... because this game kept me glued to the screen. My friends started to get worried. No seriously. Today, it's certainly not without its kinks. Some of the minigames are really poorly made (that's not to say that SQE wouldn't add a dozen poorly designed minigames into their newer games too). The 'super deformed' variants of the characters are a little jarring today. The summon animations are really, really long. The amount of grinding necessary for progress is still substantial. Yet make no mistake, it was a masterpiece yesterday, it still is today. Daring of the Squaresoft of old to declare a bunch of environmental terrorists the heroes of the story. The character design is nothing short of visionary. The storyline, from the big picture to the personal, are strokes of genius. The progression system motivating as hell. The way the video sequences segue into the backgrounds and vice versa – unparalleled. And the central twist ... a spoiler to which no statute of limitation will ever apply, so shhhh!! Update: After 20 hours with GOG's day one/hour one version. I had one crash during the entire time. Honestly, I don't remember the PSX version running this stable.
