ELEX is a handcrafted action role-playing experience from the award-winning creators of the Gothic series, set in a brand new post-apocalyptic Science Fantasy universe that puts players into a huge seamless game world full of original characters, mutated creatures, deep moral choices and powerful action.
In ELEX, you join the war over a powerful resource that gives people great magic-like powers but turns them into indifferent cold creatures. You decide if emotions and humaneness or cold synthetic logic will rule the world of Magalan.
Completely seamless Open World experience without borders and loading zones for the ultimate exploration experience
Vertical Exploration: Use the jetpack to reach any place in the game world
Simulated game world where everything reacts to the players actions and provides for an authentic atmosphere
Highly interconnected quest system that support true player choices
Tactical and challenging combat system for close and ranged combat
Universe set in a post apocalyptic science fantasy universe that combines the most interesting aspects of all genres
BAD: It ends abruptly, it may be forcing you to pick a decision you are most like not comfortable with; the combat is a bit clunky; it crashes from time to time
GOOD: large world, multitude of characters in different locations to meet and help, the story is interesting and world is fun to explore, there's a grind part that may have a very negative outcome (see BAD), that might catch completionist people off guard
Overall: it was fun for 60hours. It has 3 factions to chose from, so there's some replayability... I have had enough after single run.
I really did enjoy Elex, however I was able to complete it in ~40 hours and I did basically everything there was in the game, at least I think so. So time/money-wise I'd like to have more to do in the game.
The general feeling from the game is that it was rushed to release, the universe/locations aren't as great as in Gothic series, they surely could use more dungeons, the cut scenes or some story related discussions leave you not understanding one thing, as if you were missing some portion of the story, some intro maybe or something.
So generally speaking the game is fine, I really did enjoy it and I can definitely recommend it to anyone who loved Gothic, but I guess I expected more, or at least weeks after completing it it feels like it should have had much more in it than what you got. The whole story-wise experience was kind of shallow to me.
Many people especially on Steam say the game is HARD, very hard, that is a complete BS, it sure is hard from the beginning but once you progress it gets maybe even too easy, basically it is a regular Gothic in this regard and anyone who says it is hard is a modern cry baby who has never played anything else than some console junk.
So again I do recommend the game, but maybe wait for some nice discount. $30-$40 is a much better price tag for the game than its current $60.
Wish they would have spent at least 6 more months polishing the story, dialogs, environment...
Up front I have to admit that this game kicked my butt when I first started it, and it's still doing so after 14 levels. That said, patience and tactics are needed; button mashing will not win the day. If you can hang on long enough to learn how the combat system works, and you loved the Gothics, then you'll probably enjoy Elex.
A worthy successor of the Gothic spirited games. A great world, a new way to travel via the jetpack, very good companions and an excellent story. You have to solve different taskes and the world reacts different to you depending on your faction. You can even create a small camp of your own and defend it. This game is just a dream. The world is superb like in all Gothic games. If I could give 6 stars, it would be for this game.
I also like the crafting and upgrade system. And the believe able world and factions. There a lot of moral dilemmas and your choices have serious impact on the world. I would wish for even more reactions on some quests from more NPCs but there are plenty and the devoping studio is small. For Elex 2 I would wish the your teachers would react if you kill an important enemy and tell you, that you made them proud. By anyway a great game :).
I must say I missed Piranha's games. Maybe I was busy raising children or sth. didn't click but I skipped the Risen series.
Elex is a very decent game that has all the elements that make people their fans: raw combat system, dangerous world, exploration that matters, unlimited inventory but also semi-scarce loot.
Playing other games like that (one of them from the iconic post-nuclear franchise :P) I feel like being forced to work as scrap mule.
This game can be tedious since you need to skip fights that would get you killed (most of them in the beginning) but at least it gives you some kind of sense of adventure. Keeps you on your toes on occasion.
All in all - piranha games are something different and here's a good one. Recommended for people who would like to take a break from more mainstream titles.
