I am terrible at making reviews. So really I want to say is read the other 5 star most helpful reviews because they are spot on with what they are saying, and they are saying it better than I could.
I am a huge Gothic fan, and this game really scratches that itch of wanting more games like Gothic. Also, the music in the game is fantastic, really helps with the atmosphere with in the game.
Drova - Forsaken Kin is a decent clone of the classic Gothic series, capturing many of the beloved elements that made Gothic a cult favorite. From the start, most of the open world is accessible, allowing players to explore freely. The game features multiple factions to join, well-crafted combat mechanics, challenging enemies, and NPCs with their own agendas. The immersive environment is intriguing and does a good job of pulling you into its dark and mysterious world.
However, it’s clear this is the developers’ first attempt at a game, and it shows in several areas. The story is fairly average, and there’s little opportunity to build meaningful relationships with NPCs. Dialogue choices lack real impact, and the enemies feel like direct copies from Gothic without any fresh ideas. Even after several patches, bugs are still noticeable, and the lack of support for ultrawide monitors is a glaring omission.
Overall, while Drova - Forsaken Kin is an enjoyable experience for fans of Gothic-style RPGs, it doesn’t quite reach the heights of its inspiration. With more polish and innovation, this could have been a standout title.
Battle mechanics are quite enjoyable and easy to grasp, but you can outplay stronger opponents with good timing. These mechanics also seem well thought through. Dashing and stamina management is important. The speed of the combat is paced well and gives the possibility of planning your encounter, or even fleeing as I had to do a couple of times with wolves.
The enemies also have readable movements and wind-up for their skills.
The menu interactions also seem welll planned and easy to understand.
The interactions with the characters are enjoyable, and not knowing the identity of every character until you speak to them is also a nice touch, I like meeting new characters.
The story starts interesting enough, but I am still at the beginning of the first act so I can't say much.
And I also like the style of the game quite a lot, it's pixelated but still stylish and good looking.
Overall, the game is incredibly well made with it's mechanics (at least in the early stages), style and story elements.
I'm only in chapter 1 but it's thrilling. Writing of characters could be better at certain moments but everything else is great. It makes you feel like your actions have consequences (dunno if that's actually true) and combat is fun
Do you want to explore a carefully crafted and detailed world that rewards exploration?
Do you want to flee strong enemies, but then come back stronger and beat them into the ground?
Look no further.
20 hours in and I'm still enjoying exploring this world and being surprised by what it hides.
There's a real sense of progression that feels meaningful.
Combat is also very fun.
Enemies wil give you a wide berth when you get comfortable with your preferred weapon type.
Also there are "boss" enemies.
They'll immediately wipe your face into the dirt.
I'm eagerly looking forward to doing the same to them.
Understand that if you're not doing meaninful damage to an enemy, then it means they're too strong for you and you need to avoid them. Run past them, grab that spear, then run away. Then come back stronger.
There are few games that give me the same feeling that this one does. Like other reviewers have stated, if you're still on the fence, then just hop on in.
This game won't disappoint.
