In the 1980s, Defender of the Crown helped define a new kind of cinematic strategy game. Now it returns, rebuilt for modern platforms and remastered with an entirely new way to play.  

Conquer territories, raise armies, storm castles, and shift the balance of power. It's the Defender of the Crown you remember - just sharper, cleaner, and built for today. 

 

Retro Mode. The original Amiga classic, preserved with near-perfect authenticity and quality-of-life enhancements.  

 

 

Classic Mode. Amiga classic reimagined for today. A completely new visual identity, refined mechanics, and smoother systems.  

 


Kingdom Mode. An entirely new challenge. Procedurally generated maps, special dice mechanics, unlockable abilities, and multiple difficulty levels to keep every run unpredictable.

Defender of the Crown: The Legend Return will likely appeal differently depending on your familiarity with the original. Retro is best for longtime fans seeking an authentic experience, while Classic provides some welcome improvements without fully addressing the original's obtuse mechanics. Both modes can therefore be difficult for newcomers to appreciate. Kingdom is the game's saving grace, streamlining the experience into an addictive strategy loop where even defeat contributes to future runs. That mode alone makes the game worth recommending to anyone looking for light strategy, although the overall package should still be approached with some caution. What appears to be a simple strategy game can be surprisingly, and sometimes unintentionally, brutal.

Princess

Not buying this game as long as the remaster doesn't include the original chamber scene with the rescued princess. Are "modern" audiences really this sensitive? >_>

Very well done

That defender of the crown remaster is about as good as you can do such things. Has classic mode, revamped version of classic, and then a totally new mode. Played a quick game of each and they all work as expected.

Very poor and cashgrabby remake

I refunded the game on Steam, since besides the nostalgia value and quite appropriate graphics, there is very little to actually do. The minigames are a mess - jousting seems broken, swordplay is a mindless clickfest, and options in army battles are never explained (and don't seem to matter much). The stylish animations of the princesses rescue from the Amiga version is gone. The Classic mode is not meaningfully updated from the Retro mode, and it can be finished in 40 minutes of playtime, since the AI offers no resistance whatsoever. Kingdoms is a card and dice game that has nothing to do with the original. Overall, a disappointment.

Reliving my childhood!

I am so happy to see this game on GOG! Not only can you play the original computer version, which is just as difficult as I remember, but it also has a more modernized version that I love, and make the mini games fun! I haven’t tried Kingdom mode yet. I loved this game as a kid, and this has rekindled that childhood wonder! I think it’s great!

A fun but SMALL adventure

It's hard to really go deep into why I'd argue this game is worth the price, when you can finish a regular playthrough in less than 30 minutes. On one hand, I find the simple system-machanics fun and addictive, on the other that might not be the same to you. DotC is a mini-game focused experience, where the mini-games are not only simple, but also when you learn how they really work, there is no challenge left. - Siege/catapult game? Learn the pixels and always hit the targets. - Raiding/Sword Fights? You'll parry every hit, and no death ever. - Army combat? Higher numbers always triumph. So just build a big army. - Jousting? Okay, this one is weird, and I never really beat it, but honestly, you don't REALLY lose anything by failing here. The real challenge lies in the KINGDOM mode, where it is all about DICE and DECK building. It's fun, rogue-like, and addictive... again, if you like that sort of thing. Personally, I feel I got my money worth, and I love the presentation; visuals and music. Will say, I do wish there were more to it -- deeper mechanics -- but... for being an honest direct remake of a classic, it was a joy! Highly recommend, even if without the KINGDOM mode, you'll exprience all of it in, once again, less than an hour.
