Enjoyable With Caveats

When this game is at its best, its one of the best Lovecraftian/Cthulhu game I have played. You are exploring a cool environment reading notes, discovering clues, and making deductions about cult activity. But, when its at its worst, boy is it frustrating. I ran into a couple bugs , the worst of which is a bug that happens after you pick up an upgrade item in chapter 4 or 5, it takes away your ability to jump, which is a huge problem as you need to jump to leave that area. I had some frame stuttering here and there, not sure if thats the game or my pc-I only have a mid range one. Also, Cthulhu help you if you happen to miss a very important clue. You might be left wandering aimless through a large labrynthian area trying to find that one item to scan that will unlock the next deduction and let you progress. And that final puzzle....hooo boy. It took me all afternoon and I was using a guide. In the end when I finally got it to work, I didn't feel accomplished, I felt like I had fumbled and brute forced my way through. Overall though, I did enjoy the game. I have a huge soft spot for Cthulhu stuff and I loved that the game gave you the 'science' or 'corruption' way of completing objectives and the ending was decent. If you can handle a little wonkiness, a couple bugs and some obtuse puzzles-it's worth it

Boring puzzles, too many documents

Wasted opportunity. I enjoyed so much the interactive narrative adventure Vampire The Masquerade Swansong by Big Bad Wolf. I didn't enjoy The Cosmic Abyss, despite I'm very fond of games inspired by Lovecraft (Dark Corners of The Earth, Call of Cthulhu 2018, Conarium, Dark Rites of Arkham, The Awakened, etc) . Developers overdid with very long complicated boring puzzles. You have to collect, read and decipher tons of documents in order to solve the puzzles. And even when you understand what you have to do, it's very long and tricky to apply a few solutions. Even following suggestions on websites is not so easy! I can understand it's a journey for the initiated. But designers' skill lies in conveying the impression that challenges are difficult and for a select few; they should never really design such overcomplicated, long and boring puzzles. You have also to collect so many clues you're supposed to link in the mental map. I found the map very confusing, dispersive, and not so helpful. Your radar tunes to the frequencies of certain key objects to aid your search; a good idea in theory, but in practice, it's very confusing and annoying to use, partly due to the somewhat crude graphical interface. In the end I gave up at the beginning of chapter 6. The final puzzle promised to be excessively long and complicated, I was really fed up with it. I decided to watch the conclusion on youtube. Even watching the gameplay video was annoying! :-) Wasted opportunity. It comes with good graphics, animations and voice acting. Story is not original but is ok. It lacks of atmosphere because of the invasive puzzles; and because It shows too much, it's all too obvious and visible, it leaves little to the imagination. I would have liked to immerse in the atmosphere of horror, dream and mystery typical of Lovecraft, rather than waste hours on improbable puzzles. Controls are a bit clumsy, not very responsive, unnerving on the long run. You can't save manually; it was a problem; a couple of times I had to repeat the previous section.

One of the best HPL-inspired games

Firstly can I just say the voice actor did a great job - Lovecraftian investigators often come across weasily and amateurish which pulls me out of the game, but Jua Amir gave a sense of calm professionalism which I personally appreciated. The world-building was cool and atmosphere was suitably other-worldly - this is definitely one of the strongest entries into the HPL-inspired game list! Unlike a lot of players I didn't hit any crazy bugs apart from a bit of jank with the player movement. Graphics are great. Some of the deductions feel a bit too specific - I often felt like the item I'd chosen was close enough to the actual answer but I had to end up brute forcing the solutions in the end. I also didn't realise that there were two action solutions per big puzzle until half way through - I thought they meant two clues will solve the purple deductions in the UI but only one fits. Anyway, I'll happily buy another game from this dev if they pick a new HPL story!

Flawed Lovecraftian Adventure

Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss is a decent Lovecraftian adventure game set in the near future. The gameplay consists of mostly exploration, reading notes and puzzle solving with some mild horror experiences. The quality of the game is inconsistent and there are lots of bugs. Some parts of the game look great and are well designed. But there are some areas that are buggy and poorly designed. There are times you can't tell if you encountered a bug, or if you did not just understand what to do. For Lovecraft fans I'm rating this 4 stars because there are some cool things in the game. But if Cthulhu lore is not your vibe then this game is mediocre.

Good So Far

Pretty interesting how they've got all of the clues set up. When you find clues, they go into your "Vault," which is like the classic bulletin board with pins and red twine. Linking clues together and deducing things from there. Feels pretty slick
