Description

For fifteen centuries, Hush House was a fortress of knowledge. Until the fire. The collection is ruined, and the last Librarian is gone. Only one with your unique talents can rebuild the library.

BOOK OF HOURS is an elegant, melancholy, combat-free RPG set in an occult library, from the creator of Fallen London, Sunless Sea and the double BAFTA-nominated Cultist Simulator.

Enjoy the sweet peace of organising books and customising your new home, all while unpeeling centuries of history from the occult stones about you.

The Librarian's influence extends far beyond the walls of Hush House. It's up to you to determine how history is written.

In this 20 - 40 hour game, you'll:

ACQUIRE, RESTORE and CATALOGUE occult books, scrolls and curiosities.

STUDY the nine Wisdoms, and conquer the nine Elements of the Soul.

GUIDE visitors who come seeking your assistance, choosing their paths and stories.

EXPLORE the Secret Histories and the pantheon of Hours that rules them.

RESTORE a vast crumbling edifice built on the foundations of an ancient abbey.

WREST your past from obscurity. Choose from nine different Legacies which determine who you are. You might be a Magnate, abandoning wealth to seek peace. Or an Archaeologist, fleeing the curse you awoke. Or perhaps your origins are more esoteric, like the Symurgist, or Twiceborn? Each playthrough offers different opportunities.

Soothing Roleplaying

You happen to be examining one of the still locked rooms of the Hush House, one warded against intrusion when the fog rolls in. You realize it would be a perfect day to unlock it. So you scroll and scroll over the bridge to the parish house and chat up the Rector, handing him a shilling as a "contribution" and he agrees to help. As you scroll back over the bridge, you discuss the fog. He agrees that it creates a most memorable atmosphere. Once inside, you give him a cup of tea (with just a dash of serpent's milk), and begin to discuss the finer points of what you need done. He readily agrees, and on a day like today, with that tea and your discussion, he's perfectly situated to open up that tower for you. While he does that, you scroll over to the reading room you'd set up. See, you have just recently learned a lesson in personal Exaltation, but you haven't mastered it. But there are a few other books you can reference to perfect your understanding. You can find two, but where did you leave the third? Ah yes, you read it last night. Before you go, you talk to your pet snake. He'll put you in the mood. With all of that in place, you settle in to reread your books and perfect your mastery. Once you're finished, the Rector lets you know he's finished, and you hurry over to check out the new room. There are new books, and this one in a language you don't know. Fortunately, with events of the world as they are, someone will be along shortly who can teach it to you. It's hard to explain this game unless you've played it. It's a frustrating game of discovery and occult lore, a "chill Cultist Simulator." If you like the occult, drinking tea, and playing with cards while reading weird lore, this is the game for you.

Totally (not) better game title

This game should be called Alchemist of Hours instead lol, the crafting system is way more flexible than Cultist Simulator. It feels very satisfying to abuse the crafting mechanics to get whatever you want out of thin air. Heck, this game could also be called Game of Hours, it's very addicting to play with if you're a fan of crafting genre. Literally 10h of my (weekend) day wasted (in a good way) on playing this game. Overall, Librarian Simulator is a pretty neat game, the only drawbacks are probably the UI (the cards, AYEEE), and how I always forgot to read about the lore due to always experimenting on new crafts. 8.5/10, need more moths

A True Librarian Simulator

Like Cultist Simulator, the game doesn't hold your hand and treats you like a reasonable thinking person. I was lucky enough to play the betas (and even the alpha!) of Cultist Simulator, so the learning curve was a lot gentler for me than most. With Book of Hours, I'm jumping in fresh and it's an enlightening experience. I can only handle the game for an hour or two at a time, but that's always enough to leave me feeling satisfied that I've made progress. I'm perhaps 5% or less through any of it and still learning tons. The game treats you like an occult librarian, giving you the opportunity to rearrange the library how you please, read the books as much as you'd like (limited by your soul's capacity, of course, which can be "upgraded" or expanded), and treat visitors as you'd like. Your ultimate goal is to restore the library of Hush House, but you have the freedom to do that in whatever way you would like. This is something I am happy to return again and again for bite-sized chunks every day. I take breaks because I am getting old and there is a *lot* to learn, but some people seem to be able to sit and concenatrate on it for hours. I think it's an absolutely delight and worth every penny. It's a game about alchemy, magic, and secrets hidden beneath the skin of the world that treats you like an adult.

You probably already know if you want it

It's good! If you liked cultist sim, you'll like this. If you liked the lore in cultist sim but not the gameplay, this may be more your speed. I will say that I find it a little too slow paced, sometimes I wish I could just advance to the next instance of.... something to make progress. At the very least, there is a lot of reading you can do while you wait.
