Description

Warning: This game contains flashing images.

BIRDCAGE is a fast-paced, vertical scrolling shoot ‘em up that blends the explosive action of 90s arcade classics, with modern gameplay and storytelling.

What is the value of a bullet, when you wield a sword?

  • In BIRDCAGE, the player controls the experimental RADON gunship HALCYON. The HALCYON is equipped with a wide shot, focus shot, and its main offensive and defensive weapon, The SWORD.

  • BIRDCAGE features an engaging sci-fi story, set in a divergent human future. Inspired by games like Metal Gear Solid, BIRDCAGE touches on futuristic science and technology, political and military power struggles and the nature of the human unconscious mind.
  • Story Mode, the game’s main mode is set across six stages featuring mid-bosses, stage bosses and narrative interludes.

  • Arcade Mode is Story Mode without the narrative, aimed at letting players go after score in a quicker, more convenient way.
  • Score Attack is a race against the clock to chase the highest score, while honing your skills at the game. Enemies spawn endlessly within a set time limit.
  • Inspired by 90s video games and anime, BIRDCAGE makes use of techniques such as sprite scaling, pre-rendered backgrounds and limited textures to mimic the look of early 3D games.

  • The game's soundtrack combines the sounds of 90s music hardware with modern synthesis and samples to create something authentic and exciting. BIRDCAGE features over an hour of dynamic music, hundreds of bespoke sound effects and retro-styled voice acting for stage bosses.

Mankind has branched into space and two opposing factions have emerged. On one side, SELENE, in control of the Moon and what remains of Earth, on the other, RADON, in control of the space colony CAGE.

Led by Mother ROENTGEN, the RADON Daughters have ordered GENOME Control to create a new breed of weapon. A weapon to end Earth’s reign and birth a new universe, the WORLD-EGG.

Deep inside the CAGE, a pilot awakens in the cockpit of the HALCYON - an experimental RADON gunship. Inside the newly-hatched Pilot’s mind, a Voice echoes: Destroy the WORLD-EGG.

Rare Sighting: Indie Arcade Shmup on GOG

TL;DR: Hidden gem of the shmup genre. Not deep, but great as an arcade experience. Strong recommend. While I buy my PC games primarily on GOG, there's just some cases where I have to make a exceptions. The arcade shoot 'em up are easily the largest case for that exception. I'm a fan of arcade-style shmups and have around 250 of them on Steam. Sadly, most are exclusive to the platform, at least on PC. Greats like Blue Revolver, Eschatos, ZeroRanger, and Gunvein are unlikely to ever grace GOG. So, I was very shocked to see one of my favorite titles of 2025 in the new releases section. So, I'm buying it a second time and reviewing it here to boost visibility and send the message that there can be a market for indie shmups on GOG. The aesthetic is decidedly 32-bit PSX/Saturn era, and congeals a number of inspirations and references from that time into a strong unified presentation. It looks and sounds amazing. The soundtrack goes crazy hard and is worth supporting on Barry Topping's Bandcamp directly, if that's your thing. As an arcade-style shump, I'd put this one on the easier side. I'm not very skilled at the bullet hell subgenre, and I was able to clear Easy mode with one continue on the first time through. Normal should be very approachable for anyone comfortable with other shmups. If you're genre-savvy, you might see the sword on the store page and think "Radiant Silvergun", but this is very much not that. This is six stages of simple arcade action. Lots of bullets, overpowered ships, awesome music, cool visuals. The main ship is Halcyon, and its main gimmick is a giant sword. It's not a complex mechanic to wrap your head around. You hold the button and it points at whatever enemy is closest, damaging anything it touches, and breaks if it hits enough, going on a short cooldown. If you release the button, it fires off in a straight line, hitting anything in its path. If you use it a lot, it will serve you well. The second ship, Ceyx, is slower and trades the sword for homing rockets that recharge when you graze near enemy bullets. I am a sucker for grazing mechanics, so camping next to an enemy beam and unleashing near-infinite rockets is wildly satisfying. And that's ultimately what BIRDCAGE is: wildly satisfying. Everything is just engaging enough to avoid being mindless. It hooks into everything that makes the genre click for me and does so well. It's not a deep experience requiring rank manipulation, memorization, or routing. It's for the folks who like how a satisfying arcade experience feels. Thank you, POLYGON BIRD, for taking a chance on a platform the genre has largely ignored. I hope your work sees exposure and success on here.

Played on Steam Deck review

Steam Deck TECHNICAL ISSUE: Heroic Games Launcher failed miserably when trying to install it, hopefully the future GOG galaxy launcher for linux will solve this issue. Good news is being a GOG game i just copied the game folder from my PC onto my Steam Deck and worked great afterwards, but any update i would have to do it manually all over again. Hope they work it out soon. EDIT: latest Heroic Games Launcher update worked fine and installed the game no issues. The game is very good, has many of the things i love about shmups, it has an outstanding music OST which to me its the most important aspect of a shmup, it has that sweet 32 bit aesthethic graphics perfectly done, and the maneuverability to slow down when using a concentrated shot which is awesome. The sword can block some bullets, be melee and also be used as an aimed bullet attack. The game is very good, its GOG so you own the game offline, and you support the dev and the shmup videogame genre. Buy it you wont regret it.

This is a smooth shmup

The game is very fun and challenging with a very cool story mode. I am very glad to see it come to GOG. The art style of the game is on another level. The gameplay is super fun, challenging, and replay-able, I love the soundtrack as well. The sword mechanic in this game is very well done, you control a sword with the right analog-stick and stab other ships with it, you can also fire the sword at enemies too far to reach, it never gets old.
