Unfortunately, it doesn't hold up well today. The story is interesting, but the game doesn’t do much to tell it effectively like relying on radio messages while you're trying to focus on gameplay which I really hate especially during combat. The gameplay starts off strong considering its era, but it quickly becomes repetitive and doesn't evolve add anything much throughout the playthrough. Probably the worst part is that it's too long for its own good I was begging for it to end for at least the last five hours. I had heard great things about this series but sadly the first entry didn’t do it for me. I hope the sequels are better.
I get it, I see why people have been talking about this bloody game since 2007. I was 7 years old when the original came out and it has taken me 18 years to get around to it .
If I had played this back in 2007, I'd be singing its praises and calling it the best game of all time. The story is amazing, kept me hooked, the world design, environmental storytelling is top tier and the gameplay is still enjoyable after all these years.
The things is, I have been spoilt. Spoilt rotten. I would give it full marks for 2007, but there's a few things I didn't enjoy. I wished that there were more consequences for your action, I wish that the lore was a part of the story more and not just tapes lying around, and I wish that some of the fights were more creative.
Either way banger games so if you would kindly, have a 7/10
Bioshock, the spiritual successor to System Shock, definitely had some shoes to fill when it came to managing expectations. Thankfully it delivered, and Bioshock became a gaming classic, wowing critics and consumers alike.
On to the review. Gameplay is still a blast, with a higher emphasis on shooting compared to its predecessor. Various types of guns can be found throughout the game, and you can upgrade them at "Power to the People" machines at certain points. In addition, you have the ability to unlock Plasmids, which are essentially superpowers, and power them with ADAM, the lifeblood of Rapture. Yes, using the power of ADAM, you can experience the awesome might of being able to shoot electric bolts, or control bees with just a snap. There are also various boosts you can apply to yourself to improve things such as melee damage and increase damage thresholds. These combine to create an overall exciting way to end lives several fathoms underwater.
Storywise, there is about 10 hours in the campaign with some great setup for the main villain. Unfortunately, the ending has very little difference unless you save all of the Little Sisters, which unlocks a different cutscene.
The hacking in this game is an annoyance, using plumbing tubes to hack everything while some fluid rushes towards the end of the pipe (what is it, hacking fluid?)
Graphics are mostly a positive, except for one major thing, the faces. Compared to Bioshock 2, the faces in 1 are highly exaggerated and really creepy, which could work the plastic surgery angle, but seems more a technical limit that wasn't fixed. Lighting is good, and the graphics on low are still pretty impressive. In addition, Reshade can work well, but the game can be a bit random with which setups it won't work on.
Setup wise, it can work pretty well on most systems (tested on Intel i5 520M with Intel HD and still pulled 20fps in 640x400).
Overall, if you haven't experienced this game, would you kindly give it a shot?
As I said before in other reviews that I have made for this platform the games here are really cheap and they are DRM free which is great for us as costumers. HOWEVER this game crashes and that wouldn't be a problem if the autosave system would work as intended, saving progress a reasonable amount times. Unfortunately this is not the case and the game just saves at the begining of each chapter which means if you didn't save manually at some point you will have to restart all over again when the game crashes. The final terrible issue that I found while playing was that I was saving the game constantly because of the reasons I mentioned previously BUT the game even crashes when you want to save the game and corrupts the save file. SO to conclude this review I would recommend everybody to save your progress in at least two different slots so if one gets corruted you can load the other one. I will try this for myself to finish this awesome game that is unfortunately held back by this game breaking expereince in my opinion.
One of the greatest and most atmospheric shooters of all time, a true classic that still bleeds atmosphere to this date!
The graphics are still good today and the lighting is great.
The sound is haunting.
