9 Kings
Players' stories
9 kings is an insanely fun indie gem. It got my attention during last year's Winter Sale on Steam with it's simple, yet charming visuals and interesting looking gameplay. I'd discribe it as a rouglike card/base builder game. You start with one of the 9 kings, get cards and set up your base - units that'll fight, towers or support building. Then the next wave will come and, should you survive, you'll get at least 1 card and keep on building, upgrading, trading. The more I played, the more I found myself thinking about possible plays, combos and wheter they would be possible, would they even work? Here, they are 99% likely to be possible! I expected that it will have some good combo options, but the amount of heights you can get to with the right builds/set-ups is amazing. I never liked when strategy games have limits on upgrades (for example: you can buy stronger weapons, but it'll only have 2-3 levels). Here, there is no limit! Start with an archer group which has 1 dmg, set up some supports for bonus % every turn, get flat bonuses etc. and if you survive long enough, they'll hit millions! While each king has only 9 different cards, you'll have several opportunities to get cards from other kings, so there'll almost always be combo options. Not to mention a "special", occasionally encountered king with very strong and very unique cards to get. Aside from getting the right, most useful cards, the second most important thing is placement. You'll start with 9 empty zones to place buildings and units (more can be unlocked later). You'll have to think ahead when playing cards about what you'll want to place later and where! "If I can get 'that' building from 'that' king, 'this' unit will get very strong!" "But then, can I afford to left that spot empty that long?" 9 Kings was an extremely pleasant suprise and, since it's still in Early Access, I expect it to be even better as development goes on. It would be great to have it on GOG!

Take advantage of chaotic combos and powerful perks to break the game and become overpowered. Grow your kingdom in strategic ways, prepare for dozens of unique events, and show the world your kingdom can outlast all others.

From humble village to massive citadel, your capital recruits your units and grows their power. Expand your kingdom strategically over time and build it to survive decades of war and strife.

From sturdy knights and warlocks, to glass cannon wizards and bombers, to hordes of fiendish imps and sentient mushrooms, there are dozens of units to lead and fight. Stockpile gold to hire thousands of mercenaries to your cause, use dark magic to raise the dead, and harness nature itself to bring down your enemies!

Each of the kings has a different starting deck of buildings, troops, and spells, but you can loot the rival kings who attack your lands to access cards from their unique decks. Make peace with those whose units don’t fit your playstyle, and declare war against kings with the powers and units you covet, deploying the tools acquired from your enemy to unlock countless combinations of stacking buffs and modifiers to build an invincible army.

Combine your cards in endless ways – try out insane builds and watch massive armies fight for your crown, survive as long as you can against increasingly powerful enemies, or break the game and watch all challengers crumble before you.

9 Kings, One Very Happy Player ;)

Insta-buy! Good sale price, 9 Kings offers an impressive amount of entertainment. I’ve already spent many enjoyable hours experimenting with different strategies and builds, and the replay value is excellent. The graphics are appealing, with a distinctive style that makes the battlefield easy to read even when things get hectic. The sound design and music also complement the gameplay nicely, adding to the atmosphere without becoming distracting. What really stands out is the value for money. Considering the amount of fun and replayability you get is remarkable. It’s easy to pick up, challenging enough to keep you engaged, and perfect for quick sessions that often turn into “just one more run.” A fantastic little game that's definitely worth adding to your library! ^_^!

Interesting mix

I will go with bulletpoints for this review: - Game feels a lot like Into the Breach, which was mixed up with the tower defence genre. - Roguelike element of resources being in the form of randomly looted cards, and then making the best out of the worst situation. - The game in its current state is quite fun. But after like 20 hours, you will move on to another title. - There are bugs here and there, for example, the game deadlocked for me at level/stage 66, twice (and I reached this stage twice) - Balance feels off (some buildings are utterly useless, while raw damage tramples any other stat) All in all, really cool game, but not a masterpiece.

Me likey

Game was only $10 and i enjoyed it a lot so far. I started getting into rougelites like slay the spire and Megabonk and this game is pretty similar. Played about 10 hours now and this game is hard and addictive. Some of the campaign missions are super easy because of the kind of cards you get but some are a PITA to get through. Some levels you have to rely on rng to give you a combination of decent cards and bonus abilities before the difficulty ramps up and for me it took me about 2 hours just to beat one of the first stages.

Good price point = well worth it

Bought this game for a few bux yesterday, which I believe was the day it was released. I don't usually do that but the pixel art is totally on point & the simple gameplay looked fun. Good strategy, automated battles, and lots of stuff to experiment with. There's definitely a learning curve although it's easy to get started. The mission mode adds a lot - it's a puzzle mode which can help you learn and is an enjoyable alternative play approach. Ain't easy though! It's pretty replayable due to having multiple kings to choose from and progressive unlocks. I'm sure you can easily crank out dozens of hours on this, which for under $10 is a lot of bang for the buck!

Having a blast!

I was expecting way less content from EA but I have already gotten more than my money's worth. The gameplay is good, is not the typical StS copy as you build a little base and not choose attacks. There are many decks, so a lot of synergies to experiment with as you can combine them. At the current price is worth a purchase.
