Knocked it out of the park

I have only played about 5-6 hours so far, but I wanted to stop by and recommend this game. It is very much Yacht Club Games at the top of their form: the game looks good, sounds great, and feels fantastic. You can find a range of inspirations in the game - most prominently, the 2D Zelda titles - but Mina the Hollower doesn't feel like any of its forebears. Again, classic Yacht Club: the pieces seem familiar, but retro games never really felt like this. The one warning I'll give is that it's hard. After Shovel Knight, I expected a robustly challenging game, but I didn't expect it to dial up the difficulty so early. The first boss was surprisingly fast and killed me several times. That said, the game also comes with an impressive array of modifiers, allowing you to adjust the difficulty as needed. So, even if you're not into difficult games, you may still find a good time here. Yacht Club Games, I hear, is in some financial trouble. The Shovel Knight spinoffs they made didn't sell well, and if Mina doesn't sell well, they could well go under. All I can say is, if they do, what a game to go out on! EDIT: Finished it now. What an incredible game! I stand by everything I said previously. I would just like to reiterate that, despite all the comparisons to Zelda and Bloodborne, Mina is different to both of them. I've finished many a Zelda and Soulsborne game in my time (sometimes several times), but that didn't make me an instant expert at controlling Mina. It's not that her controls are harder, or unfair, or clunky, or poorly designed (on the contrary: her controls are fluid, precise, and brutally exacting). It's that you will have to develop new skills (not just apply the same old Soulsborne control scheme to a new setting). But once you develop these skills, hollowing will quickly feel like second nature.

Yacht Club Gambles and Wins Big

Yacht Club has done it once again. They've made a game that has all the nostalgic feel of GBA Zelda with the challenge factor of Bloodborne. The classic charm and appreciation for the 8 bit era that they fomented in Shovel Knight comes through again in this incredible title. They also paid attention to so many issues from games of that time and created inventive solutions. Too hard? There's a feature to fix that. Too easy? Same deal. Want to replay from a completed file? There's New Game +. Want to do things out of order? Gp for it, but be warned, it may be even more challenging. They even thought of things like "What if I chose the wrong starting weapon" and allowed you to try each and change your mind before leaving the area. They gambled big on this title and poured their hearts into it and it has paid off in spades

Old school almost to a fault

The retro visuals are great, the control scheme is intuitive, the story is compelling, and it's difficulty is incredibly customizeable. This game can litterally be as difficult or as easy as you want. While it's meant to mimic old school exploration, the map system isn't great for someone like me that gets turned around easily... Almost a deal breaker. Everything else is great.

The best game NOT for everyone - 100%

Mina the Hollower is a beautiful game featuring wonderful graphics, fantastic soundtrack, rewarding exploration AND a punishing combat/respawn system I 100% my first save file of Mina, loved it to bits and is my personal game of the year... WITH that being said, this game is NOT for everyone. The start is terribly punishing and WILL test your patience. The game is to be learned and and play how the game wants to be played. I am disappointed in reading some of the reviews that confuse difficulty with the quality of game design. I urge you to play Mina. Explore, talk to the NPC's and find the secrets around Tenebrous Island. God I love this game so much. ~Jaquettt Protip: Master the burrowing system, it is as essential as parrying in Sekiro~
