Mark games as 'already owned' (without purchase).

Added byIonal's avatarIonal

Marking a game as already owned adds a 'greyed out' item to the personal shelf of games (without downloadable content) and furthermore changes the button on the page of the game to already owned. Also any future promovational offers marks the game as already owned and should hinder the purchase until the 'already owned'-mark is removed.

This would be a great feature! Especially since some games come to GOG after they appear elsewhere.

GoG is a great site, and I stop my self very often from picking up some of the games on big sales because I know, or sometimes only think I have them else where. An option like this does two things for me as a customer directly related to GOG. It makes me more willing to go through the whole sale to look for items I might like or need to finish a set or such, and two it lets GoG make other recommendations for games based on what I've bought elsewhere.

I don't think GoG has any reason to give the discounted bonus from their special bundles to games bought else where. I think a little You got dis. Tag is fine, but it's asking for too much to want them to give you the discount. I like and support this idea in a basic sense. Give people a way to tell us things that they own and aren't interest in buying again.

Linking to Humble Bundle, or elsewhere sort of like spoon feeding you. If that's something you NEED to have the alternative I can offer might be just the name of the location on the I have this tag. IE. You already own The Witcher 2 : On Steam. Or something like that. It seems a tad over kill for any more.

Sorry if this seems argumentative or anything. All opinions are valid for their own merits. I simple have limited use or need for some. I find the use being easier if it's not a lot of features and rather small improvement patches. Thus letting us get the benefits in a more timely manner.

It can also help GOG finetune their models. As in "this user fits a certain category that owns games A, B, C and D. But he has not bought game B yet. Why? Is our model wrong? Should we make a special promotion?
It turns out he already owns the game and your model is spot on. No more worries.

Also, new users need not be a blank sheet. "Tell us what you have, and we will point you towards something you may like."

Useful feature= YES and have the option of noting where else the game is owned.

This could be a BENEFIT to GOG as it could provide marketing info (Who owns what were) and would be very useful in doing "TARGETED MARKETING".
As a example, Customer owns Deus-EX elsewhere and normal GOG price is $9.99... you send e-mails to customer trying to incite him to purchase a DRM FREE copy @ $1.99.

While the amount of the sale would be much lower you garner a sale you otherwise would never get .(Unless customer purchased and found out later he already owned a copy elsewhere)

, it would also benefit GOG sales wise as it frees up the customer from wasting time double checking if they own something, freely them up so they could be hitting the "Buy-Now" button more often!

Another plus is it KEEPS THE CUSTOMER on the site....
(I find when I do suspect I may own something I get distracted during my search to confirm such...

I would think it would be better to keep the customer on GOG site, than him ending up on a "competitors" site and while there making purchases there instead of thru GOG.

KEEP THE CUSTOMER IN YOUR STORE!

Last reason for adding the feature is most of us are not "happy" finding out we already own such. Not many people rejoice finding out they just bought something they already had.

@jorlin: Then it fails. Because I'm wary of accidental re-buys, I always check my unified list of what I own.

That's more hassle, so I'm less engaged in GOG sales as a result. The process also puts me in a mindstate more resistant to impulse buying.

While I would like this, I don't see this making sense for GOG from a business perspective. GOG's aim is to let you buy as much as possible. After all, they are a commercial shop, not a charity.

I would REALLY LOVE to see this. just so I don't accidentally buy anything I already have somewhere else.

then, If I want to buy it nevertheless, I'd have to buy it as a gift, and if I want it on GOG anyway, I'd have to gift it to myself. just like in the promos: if you own something, you need to buy as gift, then you gift to yourself whatever you want, and get the keys for the rest.

please, gog.... THAT would be an useful feature...

plus we already have a wishlist. so having an "already owned (elsewhere)" list doesn't seem like too much to ask... right?

Agree with it as stated - just a simple checkbox that allows you to mark it as "I own this", so it is greyed out and marked as such on lists. Same thing that Amazon does for recommendations - you can either mark something as "I own this" or "Not interested".

Simple situation: you buy in retail shop/steam/from gift and you have some game. GOG don't have nothing $$$ from this game soooo.. NO. NO option for people who get game from other source than GOG. NEVER. One source is allowed: their source. They pay for servers, people and all staff. If something will be nice, that i believe in option: I don't like this game. Why? NEVER buy it and only make me angry, no new buy from me.

Maybe just a special label like "marked as owned", "owned on steam" or "in my humble Library".

I recommend a change to this request. If you mark a game as owned you should be able allowed to enter a URL link for personal use: For example the store you already got the game from, as a download link, game library (at humble bundle or something), or a note/message to yourself.

A separate collection page (like there is for wishlisted games) is probably easier to implement and just as functional. Some visible icon on the game's page and in lists is probably most important.

A separate "ignore" or "don't want" flag would also be handy, while we're adding game status flags.

In its current wording this is too much to ask.
Asking to add the option to mark game as "already owned"? Reasonable. Asking that any game not purchased on GOG receive some of the benefits GOG-purchaced games have (promo discount etc.)? Not so much.
So yes, I vote for the first part of the wish. But alas, the second part makes little to no sense.

Assuming this gets in (and I did vote for it), I think it would be too much to ask that games bought elsewhere count towards the various 'promo bundles' GoG does like game previously bought on GoG do.

This is a must have! :) Pleeeease Gog.com team, include this option. I like supporting Gog.com, but I don't want to purchase games twice, so this marking option is very nice.

It would be cool if there was also a symbol on the main page to show which games are owned to prevent clicking on them in the first place.

Definitely do this! I'll finally be able to grey-out Witcher 2 which I brought from GoG but because it's geolocked to the AU version it still shows up as not bought in the store pages :/

I'd like this feature too. As GOG gets more recent and new games, overlap with other purchases get more common.
It would be nice to be able to mark each game as at least "owned elsewhere". It would be even greater if GOG could import your Steam game list directly and do it for you.

I guess this could work. If it just said that you owned it, but didn't actually let you download it, that would be a nice feature, I guess. Especially if it had an option to not show the "Greyed out" one on your shelf, that would be a fairly neat feature.
Not exactly the most useful for me, but for people who own a lot of boxed games, it could be nice.

Would really like this feature. I am slowly buying digital copies for my most loved (and owned) games and with this feature I could see quickly which ones I am missing (and no, I don't want to just merge it with my wishlist as I personally give the wishlisted games a higher priority to buy because I was not already be able to play them)

This is a good feature not just because some people can forget what they've bought but also because it allows faster browsing through games and focusing on new games instead (because it's easier to skip games you already own).

Great idea! Having about 400 games on steam, buying duplicates can happen, specially when they are titles that I acquired in a bundle.

I agree with this. The site already has an option to not display games you've bought from GOG, so any argument about the concept of such a feature is besides the point. If it's valid to filter out games you've bought on GOG, it'd valid to filter out games you've bought, period.

Trust me, Cobalt, when you have build up an inmense games library, this will happen to you. I can't remember how many times I went to purchase a game only to notice I already owned it. And this only on one platform/service. If I own a game in another one, then I'm even more likely to forget.

This would be awesome system. Something like "Bought elsewhere" would be nice. I have some games as physical and some games sold here I have already bought from Steam so it would make it easier to browse games when you would be able to hide games you have bought elsewhere. Also, an idea about Ignore would be nice and then you would be able to hide games you are not interested in.

The simplest solution is to give us the ability to add games to an ignore list. Thus we could not only mark already owned games but also mark games, which we are not interested in. GOG would benefit from profiling us better for advertising ;)

Include a field where I can insert a hyperlink to the download page (eg. my Humble Bundle redeem link or the Desura page for the given indie game) and this would be a decent stopgap for the lack of a non-Steam unified game manager.

It doesn’t seem like much overhead, just an option for the user to manually mark a game as “already owned”. He/she should be able to buy / gift the game (again) or to remove the “owned”-label. The difference is on a detailed game page, where you “own” the game, but are not able to redownload, since you didn’t buy it here. ;) It will be more useful for the user if he can see in the list what games he owns. You could display the “already owned” button in another color or text to indicate that a game is not purchased on Gog.com.

I would prefer this option as well, sometimes I buy the digital version here, but others, I'd just simply like to ignore when looking through the catalogue. This doesn't mean that we shouldn't be able to purchase the game later. Even in the bookshelf, they don't need to show, if they do, simply grey them out and only allow a member to purchase it if clicked.
