Keep GOG.com a curated store
Well now there's a stupid Polish COVID game in GOG that's using the gimmick of supposedly giving a percentage of sales to charities to make dumb people give them good reviews.
Even though in comparison by now Steam has probably hundreds of games exploiting COVID related names I think Steam and GOG.com are the only major / important PC storefronts that have allowed these kind of crappy Mobile Phone style cash ins in their stores and with GOG.com looking like they are now trying to play catch up with Valve/Steam with Galaxy 2.0 instead of doing their own thing it seems it will just be a matter of time before they start letting in in their store those crappy "anaim"/hentai visual novels, asset flip games and cheap cash in games done over a weekend
Agreed. We don't need a Steam 2.0 happening to GOG. Just look at Nintendo's eShop and Valve's Steam storefront with their lack of curation. At least GOG is curated unlike those two.
While it seems like a great idea, I'd rather see cross-site ratings and links to editorials and ratings on other platforms as well (if the version differs, indicating as such). Sometimes I would want to grab a game because it is relevant to the game series / franchise story and part of its lore - even if it's bad quality, for completeness sake or simply for nostalgic reasons - and I much prefer the approach of patched or enhanced versions of games to downloading from some abandonware site or getting some illegal copy. A lot of people won't agree with me, but, given that I can get things DRM free and thus can make backups and run it either emulated or otherwise on more modern systems, in my not so humble opinion, preserves the 'cultural heritage' of some of the old games.
How can I make sure that the curation team, while naturally having to take into account the commercial / business aspects of games as well, will be mindful of such titles.
Some of the games I like are niche titles to begin with, less popular with hordes of other gamers (which mostly roam on that other big plattform).
So.. agree on the quality control aspect (as in testing, making sure patches and installers are ok, functionality is not lost), but not on the choice of featured games aspect of this vote.
Truth be told, some games, like Civilization 4, are much worse on GoG than on Steam and much worse still on Steam than the original (for example the number of players in multiplayer), whereas some games from the franchise, like the multiplayer gold edition or ultimate editions of say, Civ 2 or a rarity such as CivNet are simply missing on both platforms. In other cases, like Battle Chess, instead of featuring the CD version as an ISO with all the high quality sound effects, both only feature the Windows or DOS versions with much worse quality sound effects.
If that is the result of curation rather than negotiation with publishers / owners with rights to the titles, then that is a cause for concern.
As a result I am unsure how to vote on this idea.
I'll vote yes for this but only in good faith of the gog team. I don't want this to be turned into a weapon against "a tiny but vocal group" so they become censored and don't get a game they want just because others dislike that game. the website is full of very low quality games anyway so I don't really know what direction we are moving in. I want gog to do more quality control but I don't want good games getting blocked or censored, or people censored. It's kind of a double edged sword and a very easy thing to accidentally do wrong. but as I said, gog is full of awful games anyway right now so I'm just dizzy with the whole thing. I just try my best to avoid awful quality stuff to be honest. I hope they add features to hide games we're not interested in.
I see this is an old topic.
Curation is just one part of the solution. What the store should have is a robust and RELIABLE tagging system. If I search for "RPG" tag I shouldn't see games that don't have it. This is one of the main reasons the mobile app store sucks (do a search there, and you will get irrelevant results right on the very first page).
Curation should go hand-in-hand with accurate tagging. Do you know why database programs can give you 100% reliable results from a data set containing millions of entries? Because each entry follows rules. Similarly, if games were tagged properly, filtering for them would be trivial. With a good tagging system in place even if curation was iffy people could still reliably filter out tags they don't want.
Yes, I would like GOG to keep their "hands on" approach that verifies that the games function properly on all the relevant target platforms with proper install files as opposed to allowing whatever any & all publishers/developers want to "push out the door" & upload irregardless of whether it's been properly tested or not.
"Quality curation" is a joke and an illusion to anyone who isn't a blind GOG fanboy.
Woo standards of quality! Voted. Not early - I just saw this. But I shall vote often. ;)
In hindsight (darn un-resizable text-entry field), that gives the wrong impression in one critical detail:
Even when "piracy is the only option", I don't do it. I own enough games that I take pride in refusing to pirate games I either can't afford or can't get DRM-free for any price.
I agree with the title, but not the description.
As a matter of principle, I buy my PC games rather than pirating them but, sometimes, there's a game that's generally agreed to be mediocre but I want to collect it for some historical or personal significance it has... and it either never had a CD-ROM release (I don't pay for floppies) or it costs a fortune.
Curated, yes; Restricted to only the best games, no.
GOG already has crappy games in their catalogue. That's what reviews are for. Let the curation keep out the games with no redeeming qualities and let the reviews identify the nostalgic garbage that is on GOG because, otherwise, piracy would be the only option.
"don't add a game that's manifestly bad or broken just to silence a tiny but vocal group requesting it." Do you have an example for that?
I couldnt agree more with this, loss of quality control has already happened over at STeam with seemigly anything being for sale on the site. I admit i have an extensive library of games on Steam mainly because it is a convenient way to see them all and to install and play very simply. I used to use GOG to purchase duplicates of the best games to preserve as DRM free back-ups. Now, with the Galaxy client I can use GOG to play games just as easily as Steam and of course the games are improved too. With the huge advantage that browsing the GOG store I dont get bogged down in pages of garbage like Steam.
I voted.
Quality, great support and no excess flair would be an image to strive for and I shun the glitzy Steam version of PC gaming.
GOG has hit it huge so far with a conservative approach, I will keep handing over money until that remains their way of doing business.
I agree with this stance.
Really? No one else???
