Get rid of the DRM in your games (details in description)
Not possible. Now, witcher 3 does exactly the same (minor bonus content, available only through login to game through Galaxy client)
The voting deserves more votes! GOG is going more DRMed over time, today it's much worse than in 2015-2016. We got to the point of fully DRMed games like Hitman GOTY or DLCs like Fishing North Atlantic with Epic Games Launcher in games like SpongeBob or Saints Row IV. This is not GOG that I loved.
Any and all DRM is horrible. If the game forces me to do anything like connect to the internet or log into something or sign up for anything, It goes right into the trash.
@letsdance There is a solution to the cloud save / leaderboards that would be DRM-free. Let players host "private servers". Then you would choose which server you want to use to keep your saves, leaderboards etc. You could choose the official servers, you could choose your own server, or any other server hosted by anyone of your choosing. That's the DRM-free way to handle any software that uses client-server architecture - give servers to players. This way it's also possible to make DRM-free MMO games, DRM-free MOBAs and so on.
1. i'm buying on gog because i refuse to buy games with online drm.
2. being required to log in anywhere to use any game feature is drm, worse than a serial requirement.
3. that said, i still don't support this request as it is written.
the problem is, that it would remove features from games, or maybe even whole games; that have optional drm while being perfectly great and playable drm-free. for example, while i consider desktop dungeon a drm free game, it has some features (i think some of them even added with patches as a services to us gamers!) that require drm, like cloud saving (go figure) or leaderboards. while i don't need (and usually don't use) cloudsaving, following this request here would mean, desktop dungeons would have to be banned from gog, or (less likely) this feature removed altough it doesn't hurt anyone. this would be stupid.
it's less easy with drm required for multiplayer. for me, it depends on how much service i get in return (multiplayer servers needed and good?). this is a grey zone that can't be solved by a universal yes or no. but in any case, the drm requirement should be clearly stated on the game page.
Logging into a server of a third party (developer) is not DRM. If that's the only way to access some content, it's just that the content is on server, it's not part of the game itself per see. A bad move from the development, but have nothing to do with DRM or publishers (like GOG).
Think about it for even a moment. Why is developer supposed to give free access to their servers to everyone and their mothers for the rest of their life, just because they made a multiplayer title?! It's unreasonable. That's why they may require "login". Just like all those games that offer F2P games. They are free, but you need to log in into their services.
DRM is something entirely different. It means that you have to go through some hoops on YOUR PC (not on another PC...aka. server) or for a LAN/Hot-Seat multiplayer (basically, any multiplayer that does not include the official server).
It's a difference between "managing digital rights" and "managing ones own property (server)". A huge difference.
DEFCON works in single-player just fine. The official multiplayer server requires one-time verification. You can host your own server without authentication. This "DRM" some people talk about isn't DRM in any traditional sense, it's just official server verification. (It isn't Digital Rights Management, it's keeping services from being used by anyone. Much like how GOG doesn't allow anyone to download any game they want without paying, which is as much DRM as this is.)
Bought Victor Vran. Noticed that it is indeed not drm free regarding multiplayer at all (required registration). My biggest issue is just this - the promise and the cornerstone of GOG is that games are DRM free. It can be optional, but not mandatory as in this case. Why is there no direct-ip or LAN only mode? What happens when the creators shut off the servers (which will be soon considering low pop on servers)? I will not be requesting money back since I've already played a bit and it is probably too late anyway.... am still very very disappointed.
I have no interest in a STEAM clone or in using STEAM at all. I used to use it, they gave me reason to stop and I haven't looked back.
That being said a login to access the developers multiplayer servers isn't a problem or really DRM **IF** (and only if) the single player, and the LAN/player hosted matches do not require ANY login to the publisher/developers site. Or in the case of single player any online connection required at all.
We do not need games behaving like Diablo III where even the single player requires constant online connection to play.
But allowing the completely optional ability to play on servers hosted by the developers isn't really an issue as far as I can see.
As I said in the other thread, 'partial' DRM (locked-down multiplayer, etc.) is incompatible with the promise of DRM-free gaming, and seriously compromises my trust in GOG.
I don't mind logins for multiplayer, especially if it's just online and local LAN multiplayer doesn't need a key/login, just so long as the single player campaign works as it should without going online.
I don't know about Victor Vran, but most of the games I've seen people complaining about DRM for were just an option on launch to sign in or skip it. I skipped them all, except for Race The Sun, and none of them had any issues from me not using they key or getting online.
It's really sad to see, that the bait-and-switch strategy has already happened twice in this regard too, if you don't count the still existing DRM in F.E.A.R.'s multiplayer executable.
@Gengar78: Thanks for notice! I appreciate that. :-)
@throgh I am aware of that other wish and I agree that it is monumentally stupid. I have not commented on it because I did not want to give it more attention, but after I am done with this comment I'll leave my thoughts on it there. As for cloud saves, I have not even touched the galaxy client yet. So unless this is a feature that will start interfering with how I play games offline, I will save my criticisms for later.
@Gengar78: Yes noted so far. But did you have a view on some wishes or comments all over the lists? Some people want in fact cloud-savegames or to activate also STEAM-games through the Galaxy-client. In fact the growing wishes are going to remove the differences between these platforms at all. So from my perspective it is really full of risks granting those wishes and there is also a group of customers growing here wanting to remove the differences. This is of course bound with the result that games are no more DRM-free. I don't want to have a copy STEAM here. That I'm going to delete my account. If you support this use STEAM and not GOG.
I completely agree... ...with HijacK
I support this wish 100%. This shit needs to go.
Yes I fully support this. what is the point of buying a game on gog if it isn't drm free? That is basically gog's only point point of differentiation.
A lot of people on gog seem confused about what exactly is lokced behind DRM in Victor Vran.
The DLC is coming to gog as separate downloads
"The Gift of Gear", whic is a unlimited health potion is also being patched in to be avalable offline.
However the Treasure Scrolls, which are unlimited mini quests are only available online, which sucks.
Anyhow I do support this request, it isn't compatible with law in most countries. GOG will get sued if they adopt this wish.
@Hijack: That is in fact not a very kind reaction. If you don't see the kind of DRM that is your problem at all not that of the people voting here. And yes: I'm willing to gave a chance to the developer at all fixing this. They've given a really cool Q&A-session. But after those words there should be deeds. And then I'm willing to do a research.
Just as a follow-up, here's an official response from one of the Victor Vran devs:
www.gog.com/forum/general/victor_vran_developer_qa_b9a24/post35
Notable quote: "Also I'd like to point again that we'll change the Gift of Gear in the next update so it drops without the need to go online. "
For crying out loud. Victor Vram has no DRM. Go and do your research before crying out people. You make the community of GOG look like spoiled brats.
A serial number for online play and/or multiplayer is DRM, regardless of whether or not this annoys you.
From the front page:"DRM-free means no copy protection, on-line checks, or any other annoyances. It’s all about just you and your games and movies. You should feel you own the products that you buy - just like a book, or a DVD.
On GOG.com, no matter if you are online or offline, you will never be locked away from your purchases."
GOG, stick to your principles, and put your money where your mouth is. I love GOG. Don't lose your principles or vision.
Games with exclusive DRM-content should be revamped or removed.
As for Victor Vran, the main problem is with the exclusive content. A viable solution would be for GOG to provide it in its own installer. (You know, like a DLC) Think for a minute: if they had done it like that in the first place, this outrage would have been a lot less likely to happen.
These aren't the only ones either, Age of Wonders III and Two Worlds also have DRM. This is what should set GOG apart, otherwise they are just Steam with a smaller game library.
GOG please stick to your principles!
Just to clarify I'm not expressing any flat-out outrage with this wishlist entry. I'm expressing my concern (which others obviously have) that GOG could be going down the DRM path, and I'm just hoping it doesn't happen.
we don't want a game if it has drm
