Add cloud saving to GOG Galaxy client

I probably aren't the only person who has multiple computers, and especially since many of my GOG gamesare actually "good old games" i can play them on every pc i own. This makes it difficult to start playing some single player games because I don't want to be stuck to only playing it on that pc. cloud saving is by far the most convenient thing about the steam client and it would make the GOG client actually worth using.

Zróbcie do cholery sejwy w chmurze! Albo przynajmniej napiszcie na stronie głównej wielkimi, czerwonymi literami, że jesteśmy lamerami i jak przeinstalujesz winde to wszystkie twoje sejwy idą w kibel!!

Just lost 50+ hours of my life with Witcher 3 thx to not having cloud save service. Windows went down (I had W3 on different partition tho) and all the saves with it (as they are saved on win partition). Will have to wait at leat few months now to force myself to start all over again. Such a pity.

Just wrote about that in a feature request about cloud save games which I think cannot be expected. <br /> <br /> Also include "regular" protocols like scp, samba, please! Savegame sync should be checkable on game basis ... unchecking could delete them on cloud...

imo this is a must, especially as ive seemingly lost 28hrs of saved game after reinstalling windows (i had moved the game folder to another hard drive before reinstall) unfortunately, as much as i really like the gog client and freedom that comes with drn free gaming, i am not going to be using gog till its added (cloud saving) as far as im conserned, ive lost £40 and 28 hrs of my life that i really cant be bothered to slog through again

Having a centralized library and cloud saves are the only compelling reasons I look to get into a platform like Galaxy for. I have old games and old saves scattering among several computers and disks in the house. I can't be bothered to manually track them all down and then create an automated process for each one of them to sync to every device I might want to play them on. Get cloud saves going and it's far easier for me simply to re-purchase the game on GOG and continue where I left off from anywhere in the world. (For instance if psychonauts had cloud saves I would be buying it today)

Although you can easily sync the state between the PCs yourself, especially for old DOS games, a cloud based mechanism may be more convenient for some people. But please keep the sync mechanism OUTSIDE of the games, do NOT bloat old games even more with additional libraries or dependencies.

+1 integrate with drive providers like Dropbox, OneDrive, etc. Since every game is different, the actual saving to such providers would probably best be handled by the game developer. Much like support for Galaxy multiplayer is done today. GoG provide the api/abstraction, dev implement support for the api, we reap the benefit of distributing our saves all over the planet :)

@Kevertje: Cool, lets add third parties into it as well, maybe make it a compulsory account for certain games eh? <br /> <br /> @Kikix12: Ah yes, to provide options. Say we want to have the option of always on client as well to get some more games... <br /> <br /> Go ahead though, if your too lazy to copy a folder every so often to avoid losing save games, then feel free to throw away your rights to any form of ownership and put it all online.

I've seen this wish in the Galaxy list as well. A way to do this that wouldn't necessarily cost a lot of money for GOG is to allow integration with 3rd party cloud services (Dropbox, Owncloud, Drive, ...) <br /> <br /> The major issue I see is that GOG needs to know the exact way each game stores its saves... If that hurdle is taken, I hope the cloud save would become an option. <br /> <br /> @nightcraw1er.488: I don't think the suggestion is to make cloud saves mandatory (let alone remove local saves). That would go completely against everything GOG stands for.

The point of GOG Galaxy is to give options. Not force you. You wouldn't need to use cloud saves, but those that want to...could. Why so many people seem to miss this very important point?!

What a waste of time. The point for me of buying games from GOG is that I am not tied to any Client/online software. This is precisely the reason for DRM free, so to be able to play the games *without* any other requirements. Why not go the whole hog and say you want steam here!

Oh, I should clarify my idea. If Galaxy were syncing saves without the game's involvement, it'd avoid corruption via the following two means: <br /> <br /> 1. The same config file that specified where to find the saves (eg. SomeDOSBoxGame\game\*.SAV) would also specify how to tell whether the game is running (eg. Watching for C:\GOG Games\SomeDOSBoxGame\dosbox\dosbox.exe in the Task Manager) so Galaxy could check for updated save files when it detects a "game was running... now it's not" transition. <br /> <br /> 2. It could use transactional sync so that, if the save files change half-way through it reading them, the process can be restarted from scratch and anything already pushed to the server can be discarded, leaving only the last completed sync visible to other client instances.

If Galaxy supports this, I'd want it to be something like "Galaxy config file for each game tells it where saves are stored and Galaxy syncs them without the game having to be modified". <br /> <br /> Not only would it mean that GOG could add cloud save support without bothering the developers, it'd mean that cloud sync would be more compatible with my policies regarding ensuring that the game binaries I download, archive, and run can function anywhere along the range from "installed from DVD+R and the PC doesn't even have a NIC" to "Always-on Internet and Steam-like extra services".

If I had to choose just one feature for gog it would be this. I recently reinstalled my MBP and forgot to move over my game saves. I would also like my saves to be sync'ed across my desktop, laptop etc. I like the OP suggestion about alternative storage systems, upload to gog or google drive! :-) <br /> <br /> Maybe this is a feature for the galaxy client?

An uploader client would be tricky since there's no standard way to ask a game where its saves are, but the rest could be cobbled together using a Greasemonkey script. <br /> <br /> The "Saved games" button would just need to use AJAX (possibly Greasemonkey's privileged version) to retrieve a listing of the folder /gog/saves/nexus_the_jupiter_incident in your account on a service like Dropbox. <br /> <br /> The "Screenshots" button would function similarly OR would retrieve all things in a specific album or with a specific tag on some photo/image hosting service. <br /> <br /> The "Videos" button would just need a way to request all YouTube videos on your account that you've tagged with the game's GOG catalog ID. <br /> <br /> The "My personal notes" pages could just be stored on a personal wiki site like TiddlySpace. (Though you'll definitely Greasemonkey's privileged GM_xmlhttpRequest call to save changes since TiddlySpace doesn't yet support a mechanism to allow authentication tokens in unprivileged cross-site requests.)

GameSave Manager supports more games than GameStow, I believe. Not 100% sure if that's relevant to the <a href="http://GOG.com" class="light_un" target="_blank">GOG.com</a> catalog as GameStow may support specifically GOG more than GSM does.

this is wrong on so many levels... <br /> <br /> -imagine your favorite games buffering like a youtube video and having a native lag of anywhere between 0,1 and 2 seconds from sending each keyboard command to receiving the video. and thats minimum and only if everything works perfectly. <br /> -the HUGE server/net resources gog would have to provide additionally <br /> -old games dont need the best hardware <br /> -very few different games possible since diversity needs more hardware/net <br /> -there are always lost packets and lags. what that causes when sending keyboard/mouse commands on one side and receiving video/audio from the other should be obvious <br /> -video quality from modern cloud gaming providers is a joke compared to the usual resolutions you use on modern pcs <br /> -no/bad internet means no game <br /> -cloud gaming is not not drm free, its not even buying. its just renting with hard limitations and only as long as the provider exists and doesnt lower its quality which he can anytime he likes. Onlive even limits their game time to 3 years starting with release.

Having a streaming program that works with all operating systems is not a bad idea, however I think that putting linux compatibility on games would be a better idea. Besides, cloud gaming services are not drm free, which is what games on gog are supposed to be.

Gamestow actually looks pretty good. I was going to say add all the save game folders to dropbox or something, but that's hard to do if the games don't tell you where they're saving.

-1. This might sound like a good idea, but executing it in practice would be immensely difficult. For example, I can't think of any reasonable way to deal with fixed save slots and accidental simultaneous playing on different devices. Dealing with intermittent internet connection is also an issue with no obviously correct solution. <br /> <br /> Valve somehow decided to do this a few years back, and Afaik still haven't got a workable product. Last I heard, they were still struggling with the don't-randomly-delete-all-your-saves problem. I respect the gog programming team (though I wouldn't touch your downloader again with a 6 meter pole), I don't think they'd fare much better. <br /> <br /> Doing this manually is fairly straightforward, though. Find out where your saves are stored for a particular game, make a tarball (or whatever compression/archiving thing du jour for windows. I heard great things about 7zip at one point) and upload it to some filesharing site. (megaupload used to be fine, but I hear someone decided to end that)
