Elite
I am surprised the early elites are not here. Perfect mix. Gog + Elite
Game is free right now, on the dev's website:
www.frontierstore.net/games/elite-dangerous-cat/elite1984.html
Are you sure nothing can be done to bring it over here?
I'll buy it 100% on GOG! =)
Hm... "Elite can be played for free in the browser at the Internet Archive": archive.org/details/msdos_Elite_1987

Elite For Teh GOG!!!
I personally think it should be a compilation of
Arc-Elite, Acorn, Spectrum, C-64, BBC micro,
with 2 and 3 bundled together.
I voted for Elite, because, even though the PC versions are available for free elsewhere, a nice bundled package with lots of scanned-in documentation and posters etc. would be nice to have on GOG, even if only for convenience.
There's a pretty faithful open-source project called Oolite. It even uses the procedural system generator system. It would make a nice freebie, if that license mess got untangled.
Could be good to have all the early Elite games together in one package, but that could cause legal problems and re-stoke the feud between Ian Bell and Braben!
Reminds me of them times when I played it on my father's C64. Good memories.
Seen some of the stuff on Bell's site? He and Braben HATE each other. He'd be quite likely to be hosting the Elite stuff just to spite him.
I`d definitely like to get my mitts on this again :)
Maybe with the release of the sequel gog can get this as a free release to promote the new release. I would not mind if Braben updated this to use opengl 3D graphics :)
just downloaded a free version called "Elite - the new kind". extracted it and it ran without any issues on a modern win7 rig.
Archimedes version is supposed to be the best version s perhaps this one. As for no reason to be added to GOG as freeware .. Personally I don't agree. With a lot of GOG's games I could get free if I wanted. I get them from GOG because I know that they will have worked had to make it work out of the box and has all the extras in one place. Which for the price of a pint of beer I think is well worth it.
Yes all versions of Elite are available. Perhaps GOG could add it to their free games list?, Oh and while their at it, Frontier Elite II and Frontier First Encounters Elite III. If you need any help with this PM me GOG
I remember playing the demo of the newer Elite game that came out around 99-2000, was pretty sweet.
Elite is Freeware, and can be downloaded at the main(?) guy's website: www.iancgbell.clara.net/elite/ Although he worked with many other people, he -- as far as I can tell -- had the rights to -- and did -- release it as Freeware, so there's almost no point in this being added to GOG.com. Besides, on the link I provided, you can download many other ports of it to Emulate, so there's really almost no point in a GOG.com release. Although it would be pretty cool.
Either of www.mobygames.com/game/elite (“classic” Elite) or www.mobygames.com/game/elite-plus (Elite Plus.) A ZX Spectrum version of the former is available from World of Spectrum, BTW.www.worldofspectrum.org/infoseekid.cgi?id=0001601
