Despite not being very faithful to the book (or any adaptation of it for that matter), it's a very fun solid adventure game, worth many game hours, with one of the most beautiful soundtracks i've heard in a game.
Loved this game. PC floppy version was great. Not a fan of the CD version with grainy FMV from the awful film and rather naff-looking "3d" pre-rendered graphics replacing some beautifully-done graphics and sound. Agree that the adlib soundtrack was awesome. Synthiness suited this game!
I created a thread over at DuneNovels.com asking the Herbert Properties people to talk to GOG and EA about re-releases - http://forum.dunenovels.com/viewtopic.php?t=3807

@NightK: This would be the 2D Adventure game released by Cryo, not to be confused with the 3D "Frank Herbert's Dune" released several years later by the same company. www.moredz.com is awesome, the other one sucked.
Still have the Cd Version but i want it on GOG for my colllection and every ones elses..
One of the greatest soundtracks ever. Would buy this game.
This was so good. Still think the Sega CD version has slightly more polish though.
I discovered this game on my Amiga 500, and the game took so much ram that it freezed a lot... And also, the music !!! One of the best on video-games. Listen to DUNE - A SPICE OPERA cd, it's just ... wow....
Dune is the cornerstone. It turned me into a computer gamer :-) I still want to play it, still want to return to that good old glorious day. The day when I discovered this masterpiece of Cryo.
There definitely should be more Cryo games (Dune included) on GOG!
DUNE on megacd ! i spend so many time on this ! *cry*
Dune, Dune2, and Emperor Battle for Dune, would make GOG some money.
I remember this being one of the best gaming experiences I had on my old Amiga. The soundtrack was pretty much the best I had heard in a computer game at the time, and the game itself was beautiful and compelling, if a bit easy. Please please bring this to GOG. The regular version AND the rare CD version if possible. And the soundtrack. Don't forget the soundtrack. :) (And could someone PLEASE ban the spam bots that seem to have taken up residence on the wishlist.)
Yeah, Dune was brilliant. Dune II was a great game in every respect, but Dune was simply magic. Greatest soundtrack ever.
Dune II really needs to be here. We used to go to Westwood for magic before Blizzard started sprinkling fairy dust.
I'm glad to see I'm not alone in loving this game. Many hours were wasted on it in my younger days. I'd gladly waste some more days on it if it were offered.
The best game from Cryo, the best adlib soundtrack ever made, and a good companion to the novel. One of the few games I play every year.
A must have classic. Would be instant buy from me.
Please.. GOG.. let me buy this game. i play this on DosBox but it has some issues
Can't wait for the Dune saga to come to GOG. Dune, Dune 2, Dune 2000 optimised for Win7, maybe even Emperor... Damn, I'm dreaming...
Enjoying the book and I really wish to experience such a classic game!
I agree Dune II would be a great addition here. I still remember when it came out. No one had seen anything like it. Now, look at all the RTS games that have followed in its path. Not only is it based on a great book, but it is the grandfather of the modern RTS.
Dune 2000 was my first, and still one of my favorite RTS games i ever played. Unfortunately, i've not played it since 10 or so years ago :/
Bring back the first RTS, Dune was great.
Any Dune will do :) Westwood was the best before EA literally killed it and we need all the games they made before that.
I used to play the original from DOS 5 back in the day.. Loved it and still have it on floppy somewhere, along with Return to Zork. I can't believe its not on gog already... The other Dune games were great too but the original was phenomenal!
seems this site is turnig into xp up to 7 site not as it used to be older (as dos) to 7 or xp site this would be great dos to 7 upgrade!
This is a classic. Please make it available as a trilogy. I've got to play this again!!!
I have read the books and love them but i had never heard of the game, this is what GOG should be for, bringing me games like this.
Did you read the book? Then you will definitely enjoy the game. It is different from the book, but there are some improveents over it, for example, all the characters look and behave exactly as you would expect them to. Next: the power of vision, the weirding abilities are way better than what was in the book. The only thing I miss here is that you won't see any attacks with LASERs on shielded buildings. What a shame ;-)
One of the first CD-based games I played. Good memories from my youth
I used to play this game so much my head hurt. The book is literally the only novel I ever read completely on my own. I love the game, I've beaten it probably up wards of 20 times and would buy it the second it was released!!!!
This is my all time favorite game!!! I love the gameplay and like the graphics. I played it though 2 or 3 times and still enjoy playing it today. I got the CD version on ebay, but I liked the original version more. This game should be on GOG.
If you guys can get this game, I will love you forever. If possible, getting Dune 2 (one of the first RTS games) would be awesome as well!
One of the best-paced games I've played. Loved discovering things, loved the atmosphere. Was the most Dune-like experience I've had in a game, and it deserves a modern look. Really hope this one makes it.
The game was easy, but the art was beautiful, the time factor and day/night transitions were something I hadn't seen in an adventure game before, and the music - oh the music (especially the Amiga music - wow)! At the time, it was probably the most immersive game I had experienced. I would love to see this on GOG. If you can offer the CD version and the Spice Opera soundtrack CD as a bonus, it'd be an instant buy. :)
This game just for the awesome music alone.
Fond memories. Hope to see this one in my catalogue.
and I really can't believe it's more than 20 years now since I played this game, wow, good old times
is this for the first dune game that more like adventure than rts? yep, I'd love to see this game on gog, also the dune2 which is probably the first real rts ever made, that one is cool too.
I'd absolutely love to get my hands on a Dune1 copy that will run on a modern machine. I can't believe it's been 22 years since it was released, and I can't believe it still has one of the best soundtracks of any game ever made!
Never played this but I am a fan of science fiction. Please make this available :P
The Dune game by Cryo has one of the best soundtracks. The music is amazing. The graphics are not as good, but for 1992 the graphics were good and the CD version of the game even has voiceovers where the NPC characters actually talk to you. I have the original CD and I am playing the game under DosBox on a Windows 7 PC. So I probably wouldn't buy it. But it would be a really nice game to have on GOG.com for other people to enjoy.
I would love to see Dune 1 remade on gog.com. I really want to play that 1 again.
Brilliant game! Would love to play it again.
Dune was not a RTS.
It was an adventure game (with a bit of strategy sure but still an adventure game).
Dune 2 was the RTS one, and they were released around the same time (cryo started working on dune before even having a contract ^^).
I remember this game so well. Almost every major RTS since then has used its model in one way or the other.
That game was awesome. I WILL buy it!
Great adventure/strategy game, perhaps none came closer to capturing the Dune feel as well as this.
Add both floppy and CD talkie versions, plus the MP3 of Dune Spice Opera, and it's a sale.
