The PC-CD version of this 1992 title is a great adventure/strategy game, especially for its time. Loved its music, and I was surprised by its voice acting and lip-synced animation. It'd be incredible if Stéphane Picq's "Spice Opera" Soundtrack album could be released alongside Dune.

I'd love to see Dune on GOG.com, too. As to soundtrack nothing can beat CD released "Dune: Spice Opera" - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IF_0W1cYPYo

This would be awesome to get with the soundtrack recorded to mp3 from a real Adlib gold. The soundtrack is pure gold! You can here it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gUfGyfbzl9k

This was one of the games that got me into PC gaming way back when. It's also a legitimate piece of gaming history that deserves to be archived and experienced by future players. You guys need to get the rights for this, the vote count on this speaks for itself!

Think I posted in this ages ago, but I'll post again. The original CD version of Dune with the voiceovers was one I had to pass on because we didn't have a CD drive, just like most people when the game came out. What I do remember from playing the floppy version was however an awesome game with great music. Would love to hear what my THX system can do for that soundtrack.

I totally love this game since my childhood! It's a sad that next to nobody even knows this masterpiece. When you talk about Dune, everybody says how grand 2/2000 were but when you mention Dune 1 everybody is like dazzled that there actually was a Dune 1.

OMG listen to the Dune 1 sound track with the MT-32 physical output, it's amazing - posted on youtube:
"Dune (Roland MT-32) 1/2" and also there's a second part 2/2
Ponytear posted them.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4sicsAugI-k
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dXJBMIs-sA0

Had no idea the sound in older games could be/was originally so incredible.

While you're at it, check out this tutorial by beigemore of exactly how to set up a MT-32 with Win 7 64 pc. Note again how fabulous the sound is, - he uses Ultima VI for the example. Wow. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UcXBZwKhqi4

Dune 1, tweaked again and it seems great. Am putting all this here because it may help someone; beause I often refer to gog discussion forum for tech tips on tweaking old games.

Googled around some more because the music in map sounded distorted and the map was very blobby

Used http://www.grandgent.com/tom/dune/dunemp3s.htm mp3's page for sound comparison to aim at.

Increased cycles up to 18000 which appears to have helped everything a bit (picture blobbiness decreased, animation better, improved sound clarity)
Chose dualopl2 instead of opl3 because it sounded better - I read that the CD version of Dune used that, whereas floppy used opl3 (www.vogons.org/viewtopic.php?t=31494)
Set sampling rates for opl and mixer at 49716 becuz it appears to sound better than 44100 which some say is physical max for sblaster so I dunno.

Sound is now VERY much improved and game animations run better.
Finally gone is an awful flat-twangy metallic distortion in "Water of Life" and the other map music.
Settings changed from my earlier entry are:

[cpu]

cycles=fixed 18000

[mixer]

rate=49716
blocksize=4096
prebuffer=30

[sdblaster]

sbtype=sb16
oplmode=dualopl2
oplemu=compat
oplrate=49716

[speaker]

pcrate=49716
PPS - If you like ambient electronic game music, don't judge the game's soundtrack by in-game, which is ok yet compressed per PC's of the time. Mixed results reported from trying VDM Sound or MT32emu with Dune under dosbox. To really hear the music, find "Dune - Spice Opera" on youtube - there's a very good game recording with physical Roland MT-32 Ad Lib Gold, or better yet, elsewhere online you can find a flacc of the original full Spice Opera soundtrack CD by Stephane Picq ("Exxos") which is not available physically anywhere anymore. Much more rich and nuanced details can be heard. Look for posts by Cloudschatze on youtube or Schroedson on soundcloud. See also excellent review description by Rimo at vgmonline.net . Dune wiki says that EMI holds rights and has no plans to sell or release... silly I think, since retro gaming AND ambient electronic music have been undergoing resurgence of popularity lately.

PS Edit: making fullresolution=1024x768 reduced the blotchies somewhat on building exterior and the global map. Wish this was professionally re-rendered for modern screens, sigh.

Would love if gog released Dune I. It is an adventure/strategy hybrid and mouse-driven, friendly interface with good art. I have both floppies and CD; CD has voiced dialogue and was the first game on CD, to introduce animation, to introduce rendering improvements, and to introduce western strategy game concepts. Dune ii is not a sequel but a competitive effort.

Dune I is not abandonware, as some surmise.
(And I WISH whoever owns it, perhaps Anuman who bought Microids who bought Cryo's assets, would re-release Dune I as a remaster, then license it to GOG for digital sales!)
The original soundtrack "Spice Opera" by Stephane Picq (Exxos) is an excellent ambient electronic work, it is incredibly rare CD worldwide, but can be found digitally online... ought to be re-released.

I was able to get it running in dosbox (vanilla .074) with the following settings (but would rather have a turnkey, tuned-up version by gog). The settings is the best compromise for keeping details while smoothing jaggies that I could arrive at.

am not listing here the default settings I kept, just what I changed.

Set autolock=false is because I personally don't like the mouse cursor sticking inside window when I shift out to windowed mode.
Used fullresolution=0x0 - means the actual screensize (whatever it is for your machine).
Set windowresolution=800x600 instead of screensize, only because that's what fixed the game's windowed mode on this machine; any other setting made the bottom edge of the window either get trapped to the bottom of the desktop and/or the window's bottom edge was under the desktop edge which cut off the game's movement arrows & bottommost area. Normally with DosBox games, you can set windowresolution anything including up to your actual screensize.
With vanilla dosbox, direct3d is not a valid parameter, but ddraw works great with this game.
Best graphical settings combination to keep visual details (not oversmooth) while minimizing pixelation and jaggies, was this combination: output=ddraw with scaler=advinterp2x - also aspect=true to maintain 4:3 ratio. Didn't need frameskip.
Sound is sb16, opl3 & compat. Not using any external pc speakers with this laptop.
Set Tandy, Disney, GUS and joystick off because they are not needed or present, so save the resources.
Game seemed a little slow on default cpu cycles, so I tried fixed 10000 and this seems to run nice and smooth.

[sd1]

fullscreen=true
fulldouble=false
fullresolution=0x0
windowresolution=800x600
output=ddraw
autolock=false

[render]

frameskip=0
aspect=true
scaler=advinterp2x

[cpu]

cycles=fixed 10000

[sblaster]

sbtype=sb16
sbmixer=true
oplmode=opl3
oplemu=compat
oplrate=44100

[gus]

gus=false

[speaker]

pcspeaker=true
tandy=off
disney=false

[joystick]

joystick=none

The Dune 1 bat file is needed to specify machine info and is set like this (it in the DUNECD folder under DosBox's folder MSDOS/DUNE):

@echo off
D:
DNCDPRG AMR ADP220 SBP2227 EMS 386 SAF WRIC:\DUNECD\

Despite not being very faithful to the book (or any adaptation of it for that matter), it's a very fun solid adventure game, worth many game hours, with one of the most beautiful soundtracks i've heard in a game.

Loved this game. PC floppy version was great. Not a fan of the CD version with grainy FMV from the awful film and rather naff-looking "3d" pre-rendered graphics replacing some beautifully-done graphics and sound. Agree that the adlib soundtrack was awesome. Synthiness suited this game!

@NightK: This would be the 2D Adventure game released by Cryo, not to be confused with the 3D "Frank Herbert's Dune" released several years later by the same company. www.moredz.com is awesome, the other one sucked.

I remember this being one of the best gaming experiences I had on my old Amiga. The soundtrack was pretty much the best I had heard in a computer game at the time, and the game itself was beautiful and compelling, if a bit easy. Please please bring this to GOG. The regular version AND the rare CD version if possible. And the soundtrack. Don't forget the soundtrack. :)

(And could someone PLEASE ban the spam bots that seem to have taken up residence on the wishlist.)

I agree Dune II would be a great addition here. I still remember when it came out. No one had seen anything like it. Now, look at all the RTS games that have followed in its path. Not only is it based on a great book, but it is the grandfather of the modern RTS.

I have read the books and love them but i had never heard of the game, this is what GOG should be for, bringing me games like this.

Did you read the book?
Then you will definitely enjoy the game. It is different from the book, but there are some improveents over it, for example, all the characters look and behave exactly as you would expect them to.
Next: the power of vision, the weirding abilities are way better than what was in the book. The only thing I miss here is that you won't see any attacks with LASERs on shielded buildings. What a shame ;-)

One of the first CD-based games I played. Good memories from my youth
