Peculiar and Original Games

GOGmix by Sprocket's avatarSprocket 3votes

Pathologic

Sprocket's rating:
250

Sprocket says: A singular experience of barely comprehensible existential angst. Somehow the poor translation, the broken gameplay mechanic and the stiff manikin-like characters just add to the atmosphere. A game I would sorely love to experience in VR. Haunting.

Papers, Please

Sprocket's rating:
250

Sprocket says: Aggressively pinickity and tedious, but brutally compelling. A game of rare compassion and tour humour and a must for those fascinated by Eastern European Communism!

Cat Lady, The

Sprocket's rating:
250

Sprocket says: A beautiful game about ugly topics. The puzzles are satisfying, but really what compels is the story, the characters and the art direction. Very much a world of grey-and-black morality. Still, a smidgen of hope maintains.

Sanitarium

Sprocket's rating:
250

Sprocket says: I'm always surprised by how many reviewers take Sanitarium really seriously. It is structured with real sophistication (interlinking worlds nested within worlds within a mind) but it is also a campy delight . "Cyclops babies? In bottles?!"

Always Sometimes Monsters

Sprocket's rating:
250

Sprocket says: I thought this was deeply flawed, but I admired its ambition. Unusual because of the juxtaposition of cute RPG maker graphics and gritty themes. It's goofy at times, but occasionally moving. The narrative is less flexible than one might expect.

Last Express, The

Sprocket's rating:
250

Sprocket says: Frankly, a masterpiece. Not weird in the sense of being surreal or kitschy, but a strikingly original achievement. An adventure game in real-time set in a rich art nouveau environment, with a remarkable amount of political depth. Sophisticated. <3

Theme Hospital

Sprocket's rating:
250

Sprocket says: I think it is easy to overlook quite how strange Theme Hospital is. The game has a very mordant and cynical sense of humour and perfectly balances tedium with absurdity. It took me a long time to realize what was going on in the research room.

Worms United

Sprocket's rating:
250

Sprocket says: Ubiquitous now, but unlike any other game upon its release. Still my favourite multi-player experience. Worms is a parody of the gulf war involving worms and exploding sheep. That is a little odd.

Treat your GOGmix as your child - name it! ;)

Coming up with a cool and descriptive title should be your first priority. Being original is in your best interest - bet you wanna get lots of nice votes, right? Go all crazy if you want, but be sure to keep it civil!

So, what are the ingredients?

Pick a game that belongs in your GOGmix from the list, or find it by typing something in the text field. Relevance is key here - Earthworm Jim doesn't quite fit the "Sexiest heroines of all time" bill now, does it?

Justify your choice... Or not!

OK, so it's not required, but now that you went through the trouble of adding a game, telling everyone why you did it would be a nice finishing touch. After you're done here, add another game, rinse, repeat.
