Dimmer-FJ says: (Consider EE2 and to a lesser extent EE3 in this recommendation). Like Age of Empires (same developers? I forget!) but with a wider historical view, and improved management and controls.

Dimmer-FJ says: Yes, it's "just another" RTS game, but it's got some tricks of it's own, and at the time was graphically state of the art. The sequel (Ground Control 2) is also good, but the original is the better of the two.
