Independence War/Freespace Series7votes I like it
doctorfrog says: A fantastic game often overshadowed by the equally excellent Freespace 2, Independence War 2 still looks fantastic and does what Freespace doesn't, with a semi-open world, and a more complex combat model. Mods available at www.i-war2.com.
doctorfrog says: No space combat game I'm aware of has had the staying power of Freespace 2. No doubt due to the release of the engine's source, and over a decade of pirating, the number of fan campaigns for this game is astounding. Pony up the bucks and get playing!
doctorfrog says: Unlike IW2, IW1 has you managing a fully crewed corvette. Great sense of commanding a warship as you switch stations, from engineering, to the pilots seat, to the captain's chair. -1 star for the low-res compatibility issues, still worth a buy.
doctorfrog says: Freespace 1 is responsible for taking the Descent series out of fighting rogue robots in asteroids and straight into open war between alien races. Bonus: these two campaigns are available as free fan-ported addons for Freespace 2.
doctorfrog says: The original Descent series, justifiably famous for its six degrees of freedom and polygonal enemies. I've only played Descent 2, and while it is a fine game, it's a 3-D maze where you shoot mining robots. Just doesn't have the same impact.
doctorfrog says: I'm sure it's an excellent game, but I ain't played it, and with my backlog, I ain't likely to anytime soon. Not that it isn't the pinnacle of the Descent series, from a time when a sequel was actually better than the preceding game.
doctorfrog says: I can't mention space combat games without mentioning the Wing Commander series. I haven't dabbled far myself, as it's slightly before my time, but as an open-world game, I pounced on Privateer and played it long enough to know its earned the regard.
doctorfrog says: More Wing Commander. Folks seemed more enthused about WCIII than this, but WC I and II were still revolutionary for their time. Just don't link them with the movie.
Treat your GOGmix as your child - name it! ;)
Coming up with a cool and descriptive title should be your first priority. Being original is in your best interest - bet you wanna get lots of nice votes, right? Go all crazy if you want, but be sure to keep it civil!
So, what are the ingredients?
Pick a game that belongs in your GOGmix from the list, or find it by typing something in the text field. Relevance is key here - Earthworm Jim doesn't quite fit the "Sexiest heroines of all time" bill now, does it?
Justify your choice... Or not!
OK, so it's not required, but now that you went through the trouble of adding a game, telling everyone why you did it would be a nice finishing touch. After you're done here, add another game, rinse, repeat.
