Overview:

Don't like the remake? The original's now included!

Broken Sword is one of those special games in many an adventure gamer's heart - a rare gem of a masterpiece combining atmosphere, outstanding animation, well-balanced difficulty, and terrific sense of pathos and wit in its fine writing.
When the director's cut came out, it was great to have such a wonderful experience back in the public spotlight, but many fans complained thatread more the re-imagining of the classic has more in common with one of George Lucas' much maligned "special editions" than a true improvement that pays respect to the original.
Well, thanks to mass feedback from the users, whether you prefer the remake or the original no longer matters at GOG.com, because you get both versions in this package. Now you can experience the new content in the director's cut to satisfy your curiosity while delving back into the original product to see the story that made such an impact in 1996 - and the way it was meant to be played!

Loses Much of the Magic of the Original Release

It's nice to finally see Broken Sword: Shadows of the Templars on GOG, but unfortunately this is not the classic version that you would expect from Good OLD Games, this is a remastered version that does not live up to the original.
For starters the game now includes a new starting chapter which is not as well done as the original and ruins the very moody and classic opening. "Parisread more in the fall..." is gone, along with the feeling of jumping right into the mystery with the bombing. The writing in the new opening section is just not as good, and the puzzles are very linear. It was originally made for the Wii and it shows, being a much more casual experience suitable for that console.
On top of the the game now has flashing "hot-spots" that you can't turn off. When I played this irritated me more than it helped as the flashes remove any feeling of looking around the area, you just mindlessly click the flashing lights until they've all been clicked already. On top of that the visuals in many ways are actually worse than the original version running in ScummVM. Many background animations are now gone like the flags at the hotel and there is generally a more blurry and compressed look to the art. When comparing them one-after-another on my system the original version is more detailed and more vibrant.
For me the Director's Cut is anything but, it's a poor version of the game with needless additions and actual losses. I'm not sure why GOG has only received this new version when the original would make more sense to sell here. Some people might call me a purist, but then this site should definitely cater to those among us who liked games the way they were back then, shouldn't it?

Conspiracy, secret society, world domination, etc are essential for good thriller. Broken Sword, though deal with those elements, are not dark or gloomy but funny. Quite hilarious mood flow naturally through its plot. Also, if you stuck with some point, you can access hint and do exactly what required current situation(That's the best point in this game. 'cause I always stuck whileread more playing other adv game, waste time for solutions :) ). Although you must play puzzle almost every scene of game(plus repairing something), and whole plot of antagonists are broken off by just mere American tourist is littile bothersome and bizarre :). But this game is cool, fun, and worth playing.
