The gods may be crazy! First the Almighty HE, the highest of all the gods, sends Jupiter, Horus, and Ch’ib-Yu off into an extremely arduous competition simply on account of some occasional drinking sprees! The Settlers® III: Ultimate Collection is a lavishly designed, strategy-filled civilization simulation where your industrious people construct buildings, produce goods, harvest crops, and conquer new lands in scintillating real-time battles! Will you heed the call of the gods and become their avatar?

Absolutely amazing!

To me, this game has become the definition of a strategy game. While the missions in the campaign are nice, the real deal here is the free mode where you choose the map and the starting positions. Especially in multiplayer and thanks to the contained map editor, this game is a blast to play. However, be aware: matches can take very long, literally hours. Extremely cool to see this goldie here on GOG.

The coziest RTS of all time

I remember when young me picked this up back in '98. The first thing that hit me was the graphics, with it's cute, colorful and vibrant art direction. When I finished glaring and started playing I realized that this game, while not a strategic masterpiece, had quite a few things going for it. The town-building and expansion aspect of it is where I had the most fun. Building up myread more material routes, from wood, to planks, to coal, to iron, to weapons. Discovering metals and coal in the mountains. Trying to keep a steady economy going. All that was an outright delight to plan out, and watch. That little guy with a straw hat strolling about sprinkling and sowing seeds for wheat is pure coziness in action I tells ya. The warm atmosphere, and also ambient sound design, is really up my alley. I also realized that this game had done away with the need to build roads, like in the Settlers II, which took away some strategy but also some headaches for city-planning. The combat part is probably where this game falters most. You control your military units directly this time around, and it can be a real hassle. The pathfinding is adequate at best. Luckily the peasants live their own lives. The AI is not superb, and the game can be quite hard at times on account of you being too slow. I love this game a ton in the end, stumbling combat and all, and I still play it from time to time even to this date. It holds up very well on a graphical and functional side.

A suprising deep strategy game

Posted on 2013-03-07 10:05:18 bylegendofJupp's avatarlegendofJupp:

This game looks cute, the economy simulation is gorgeous, it's colorful and the campaign cutscenes have a certain Asterix flavour, all in all a very sweet single player game with a high replay value.
But I'm frightened by the multiplayer. There are people who actually know how to use the differences of the factions to their advantage, have actual "builds" and even steal my stuffread more with their thieves! I just want to build up my economy in peace and they samurai sword rush me, haha. Even if I were able to get to the "late game" they would destroy me with their superb army control with different control units etc.
...Whichof course is a good thing. It means that there is actually a suprising high skill cap, even if this game looks far to cute for cold and brutal warfare =) In my opinion the best settlers game, at least better than 5-7 all together! Check it out if you have enough spare time.
