Description

Social and economic conflicts have rocked the world. There is just one metropolis that can boast stability, but even this city only has enough resources to maintain a precarious balance of power. The authorities decided to create an algorithm that could build a perfect city for all segments of the population. This project gave birth to Iris, an artificial intelligence designed for building a utopia. Welcome to Technotopia!

Build a perfect city

You will have a deck of cards with buildings at your disposal. Build skyscrapers, parks, residential districts and transport highways. It's up to you to decide what the ideal metropolis should look like.

Maintain the delicate balance

Four factions are fighting for control of the city: capitalists, aristocrats, politicians, and the common people. They will do anything to bend the others to their will, and every decision you make tips the scales. Play the role of arbiter, meeting everyone's needs equally.

Meet public needs

A city is a living organism, where something is always happening that requires your attention. Where do you put up fire victims? What do you do with the gang that has taken control of some districts? Factions will offer their solutions, but it's up to you whether to follow them or advance your own agenda.

Form new connections

The city is home to a variety of characters. Hackers, oligarchs, criminals and inventors — communicate with the cream of the crop and provide them with services in exchange for their help in maintaining order. A perfect city is built for people, with the help of people!

Fun, but tricky Puzzler with story

I played about 14 hours and levels range from 46 to 71, far away from the 300 to 500 range in the second screenshot. The factions are Government (blue), Elite (green), Business (yellow) and Public (red). Each has a corresponding shape (t-like, z-like, 4 in a line and 2x2 respectively). Each basic building of a faction gives 20 resources for that faction and connecting buildings of the same colour in one of the four shapes gives 40 res. for the corresponding faction. Res. get reduced every 10 rounds (consumption) and the consumption increases steadily. (Reaching 0 in a res. ends the game.). If you build something and more than one shape is possible, there is a fix order of which shape takes precedent over others. That can screw you over, if you planned wrong of misclicked (like it happend to me a few times). It may sound complicated, but it is simple. On the map you have a starting point from which you build and some basic buildings are randomly placed on the map at start and they become active once you connect to them. There can also be story points on the map (like people to talk to or special buildings). The game has a story, which progresses as you play and is saved from game to game on a profile. (You have three profile slots.) Furthermore in fixed intervalls events get triggered, which affect consumption and influence. What kind of event depends on what faction has the most influence at the time. You get multiple options (criminal being one sometimes, who then gains influence in the city too) on how to deal with it and the outcome can be different than in former games. The events are varied and some a little strange. I’m not too good with explaining it, but it is very well done. There is no rebinding of keys available, but I don’t need it. Most things can be done with the mouse. The music is nice. I don’t mind listening to it for up to 7 hours straigt. I recommend this game, if you like Puzzlers with a story (until you finish the story, which I have).

Art deco scifi unique gem

Very addictive and interesting game. With an scifi art-deco unique style, fluid GUI, good models that are actually voxels if you zoom in, I had an interesting beginning figuring out the best way to endure the weeks without daying and having good satisfactory sensations when figuring out the best way to add more points to each faction. Very nice game, I recommend it. I wish they add more events, options and maybe a fourth card instead of three to the game and that they keep updating it. Very cool and immersive trance-y soundtrack. Very good!

Sufficiently novel short experience

The gameplay has some decent ideas with randomly drafting 3 buildings/cards from a deck and choosing one to place. It's passable, but it's really missing that special sauce that gives lasting appeal. The story is passable, giving a neat setting and plausible goals to proceed towards. The story contributes very positively to the worldbuilding, but also overstays its welcome in forcing some failures requiring new games to proceed. Most importantly, the price is right.

A next to perfect game

By that I don't mean this is the best game of all time. However, for what it is and tries to be, the game is basically perfect. It is an engaging, fun, clever and at the end surprisingly challenging puzzle game in the guise of a city builder. The retro-futuristic cyber punk / art déco reminiscing of Metropolis aesthetic is innovative, new and perfectly implemented. The story is interesting, neither trodden out nor overshadowing the gameplay. All in all a next to perfect puzzle game, a true gem!

Surprisingly weak

I finished the main story in 80 minutes. Resource consumption rate increases frequently, meaning overall consumption is roughly parabolic over time. On the other hand, resources are created (not consumed) by placing buildings, but these are fixed amounts and not rates. With only slightly better buildings becoming available over time, the consumption is guaranteed to eventually catch up and surpass the production, causing a game over. Main story progress persists across attempts. Story objectives are achieved by placing buildings at random locations on the map, which seem to appear just a few tiles away from already placed buildings. Taken together, the main story gameplay consists of placing random buildings in the direction of the next objective on the map. Optimizing building placement for resources is counterproductive because even the best optimization might extend the runway until game over from 40 rounds to 50 rounds or so, but comes with the opportunity cost of not advancing in a straight line towards the next objective, making it less efficient overall. Once the main story is done, the gameplay does a 180 because the goal is then to just survive as long as possible. There's a lack of objectives that actually align with city building. The writing feels subpar at times, where one faction representative personally kills a policeman, and the player then confronts the representative due to CCTV footage. That encounter seems hard to believe because 1) the reason for the killing was rather weak, 2) a faction leader would not get their hands dirty directly, 3) surely in this type of society they would tread carefully around surveillance, and 4) even if they did manage to pull it off, they would be the prime suspect. Finally, supposedly there is English audio, but that is not true.
