Simon the Sorcerer: good. 3D: bad.

Simon the Sorcerer 3D fell into the same trap that so many other game series fell for: the third dimension. At the time, it was the greatest technology bandwagon that everyone was compelled to jump aboard. Unfortunately, very few of them would survive the cliff drop at the end of the run. Nobody seemed to understand that as cool as 3D was, it was a step backwards in most cases.
Simonread more 3D was no exception. Going from the rich detail of the 2D environments in Simon 2 to the crude, simple textures of a 3D realm was rather shocking. The game looks terrible! And with that came the bad controls and the dumb 3D-terrain-style puzzles that every other "cool" game had. They also went with the "bigger is better" concept and force you to do a lot of running around through the huge landscapes of blandness. And, of course, finding hidden stuff was brutal unless you already knew where it was. The only thing worse than pixel-hunting in a 2D game is meticulously searching in a vast 3D game for those small objects to get and tiny holes to crawl through.
But the saddest thing about this is that if you can get past all that 3D ugliness, you'll find that Simon 3D is actually a great game! The story is good, the witty humor is still there, and the voice acting and music are top-notch. Even some of the more bizzare puzzles are well-done, the ones that follow the traditional adventure game style, of course. Just wait until you see how you use dynamite to go fishing, for example.
It's the whole aspect of horribly implemented 3D, though, that's in your face all the time, and can probably ruin it for you. For me, it's another good/bad scenario for Simon 3D. Simon the Sorcerer: good. 3D: bad.

The game that should have stayed 2D

The game looks like it was programmed by amateurs using Dark BASIC. It plays like it too. Some funny moments, but only worth owning if you want every Simon the Sorcerer game. Otherwise, stick to the other two, they were brilliant. Avoid this one like the plague.

For what was a brilliant series, the third game brings it down with a crash and burn.

For those of you who don't know, Simon the Sorcerer is a series of point-and-click adventure games created by Adventure Soft. The game is full of witty jokes and is compared with Monkey Island 1 and 2 in terms of visual style and layout.
The first two Simon the Sorcerer games were superb, but does the third game involving our young wizard live up the high expectations? In a wordread more - no. Infact, you'd be better of playing the first two games and pretending this doesn't exist and wait for the fourth game to be released in English (currently out in German, as of June 07).
Simon the Sorcerer 3D is not a point-and-click game, but is instead controlled by the keyboard and, hence the name, in 3D. This change really wasn't needed at all and gives the game a huge disadvantage in the score. If the game was presented like that of The Curse of Monkey Island, this game would have had a much higher score.
The main disadvantage of the game is the landscapes and graphics. Due to the game being in development for a huge time, the games graphics were badly outdated by the time it was released onto store shelves. The landscapes are also huge - this may sound good but when it just means running across an empty grass field, it gets really tiresome.
Luckily Simon's humour still remains, and slightly cheers you up if you aren't already severly depressed after running through the same gate you saw a mile ago. His sarcasam is still in tact and a few decent characters from previous games return.
I myself never completed the game as it was disgusting visually, but the story was decent. In summary, you only really want this game if you are hardcore Simon fan, otherwise just skip over this game and look forward to the hopeful release of the fourth one with high quality pre-rendered backgrounds.
