I wish to draw your attention to the fact that this game is FREAKING AWESOME.
If you like offroad driving sims, you absolutely need to check it out.
If you like driving games in general, you should check it out.
If you don't like driving games... well, this isn't like the others. You might be surprised.
The name *is* an odd one -- this game has virtually nothing in common withread more any of the other Screamer games, all of which are arcade racers around fixed tracks. Screamer 4x4 is actually a rather solid simulation of drive-anywhere offroad competition.
For you Screamer fans, that might not sound like your cup of tea, but let me just say this: I bought 4x4 back in the day in a package with Screamer Rally on the basis of having loved Screamer 2. I bought it primarily to get my hands on Rally, but I was absolutely blown away by 4x4 which turned out to be, unquestionably, the star of the show. Yes it's different, but it's GOOD!
You get a mixture of absolute freedom to navigate some amazing terrain any way you wish (in the free-drive modes), combined with (when you're racing) the need to drive with great precision through various courses in those same crazy terrains.
The simple fact is that other driving games don't have tracks like this, and you probably have no idea what you've been missing out on.
Screamer 4x4 is a serious driving game that lets you drive the way you want, where you want -- and it's a blast.

Thinking man's racing game

A game where it is not about racing down your opponent with the highest speeds, instead it is about making the best use of your breaks on all different kind of slippery and non-horizontal surfaces. When this game was released games were far away from having realistic physic engines, and by Screamer 4x4 modelling all 4 wheels individually meant a huge leap above it more Besides having an open game world in a racing game was also atypical around 2000. And just like with all open world games, it is sometimes not the pre-programmed challenges, but the fun of discovery which provides the enjoyment with this game.

Mixed bag

This game is essentially the father of 1nsane but with a lesser damage mechanic. Granted neither was all that realistic on damage. I was going to give this game a 4 just because it was as old as it is, but 1nsane was only a year newer and played better in my opinion.
