What's cool about it:

  • Take control of both Kain and Raziel for the first time in the series.
  • Utilize powerful telekinetic abilities and brutal martial techniques to devastate your foes.
  • Challenge yourself with devious puzzles, furious combat, and huge 3D levels.

Swords, sorcery, souls, and buckets of blood await you in Legacy of Kain: Defiance.

Return to the corrupt world of Nosgoth, where the disfigured wraith Raziel pursues his creator, the vampire overlord Kain. Separated by their common enemies and time itself, the two anti-heroes must wage their own personal battles to discover what lies behind their destinies and defeat the vicious forces that seek to condemn their world to eternal damnation. While their foes plot and scheme, Kain and Raziel embark on a dark and twisted odyssey. In the end, only one of them may be left standing.

The final chapter in the epic Legacy of Kain series is a time-bending, dimension-crossing, action-adventure game featuring more fast-paced combat than ever before. Take control of two mighty and highly-evolved vampires, each with a vast arsenal of combat moves and elaborate combos to unlock during their journey. A world filled to the brim with gruesome monsters, conflict and intrigue lies before them.

Can you handle the combined power of this demonic duo?

The thrilling conclusion

Posted on 2012-08-09 08:31:13 byCrisR82's avatarCrisR82:

The game that concludes the beloved Legacy of Kain series...and what better way to do so than mix both Blood Omen and Soul Reaver!
This game combines the great action from the Blood Omen series and the incredible puzzles of Soul Reaver, as it allows you to control both Kain and Raziel (one at a time) trough various locations in search for their destiny.
The visuals in this gameread more are greatly improved, along with the animated cutscenes...and the same can be said for the music - it's just perfect and adds so much to the immersion.
The only bad side to this game is that it marks the end of the series, while leaving some questions and events unclear or open for speculation.

Worth it for the last few hours, if you can slog through the rest

The problem with LOK:D is that all of the good stuff (and it is /very/ good) is crammed into the last few hours. The game unwisely tries to play "catch-up" with players who have never seen the rest of the series, by spending roughly the first 2/3 recapping the events of the previous games via a series of mural paintings.
I'm not going to act like the game somehow "belongs" toread more hardcore fans and that new players don't deserve to know what's going on, but this was not artfully handled. Even if you're new to the series, having Kain narrate stuff while looking at paintings is not an exciting way to get your info-dump handed to you. The effect is to slow the plot to a snail's crawl for a good portion of the game. I remember wanting to shout at the screen, "Oh, just get /on/ with it!"
Why the four-star rating then? Because when the game does finally get on with it, it's excellent. A thoroughly satisfying conclusion to one of my favourite videogame story arcs, with several moments where I actually cheered. It's like having to play hours of some mediocre action game, but then being rewarded by getting to watch a really awesome movie. So if you're a fan of the series so far, I recommend this one just for the conclusion - but be prepared to suffer for it.
I'm not reveiwing the gameplay here because, meh, it's functional but not amazing, and it's not really the point.

It's hard to say goodbye

Defiance has provably the most solid gameplay in the LOK series. But what I really wanted from it is more story. It bookends the series, closing most of the open threads and provides a pretty satisfying conclusion to the relationship between Kain and Raziel. But a few 'out of character' moments and deus ex machina solutions hurt the story's flow. Characters are whisked away to theirread more destinations in the plot so often, that it's clear that a bigger story was cut to fit the game. Some of the challenges seem repetitive, especially when the game hurries to reequip you with powers you have had in previous games.
The game tries in vain to bring newcomers up to speed, but it is really a story only LOK veterans could understand and enjoy.
