Lands of Lore: The Throne of Chaos takes you on an adventure: save the dying king and stop the evil sorceress Scotia’s Dark Army. Your band of heroes will travel through a vast fantasy word full of mysterious places, dangerous monsters, and hidden treasures in a quest to find a way to defeat the immortal evil enchantress and save the world.

In Lands of Lore: Guardians of Destiny you enter a world of intense beauty and mortal danger where your slightest move can trigger cataclysmic events, miraculous escapes, or lethal battles. See magical cities rise out of great oceans. Enter the musty caverns of Dracoid ruins. Discover gruesome altars and witness secret ceremonies never before seen by humans.

Lands of Lore 1+2 is a solid piece of cRPG history. It was a time of transition from 2D to 3D, from floppy disks to CDs. New technologies allowed things like live actors in 3D environment, full voice-overs, good sound quality, and CGI sequences. All this was used in Lands of Lore 2 to create vast, rich world that is anything but boring or ordinary.

LoL :) Gorgeous and beautiful, but caution is advised

While i cry like a little girl for seeing these two RPG gems, i have to say ... not all is well in The Lands.
LoL 1 is the nearly perfect Dungeon master clone. Its the culmination of this gameplay formula. Entertaining classical gameplay, adjustable difficulty settings whilst playing the game, a very comfortable automap and not as easy as it may loook. Great game from a once greatread more developer!
LoL 2 does everything better, but sadly has one MAJOR flaw. Your character suffers from a curse which turns him involuntary into a giant beast, into a little lizzard and back to human again. Which enables you to reach unreachable places on the map or you can endure a multitude of enemies all at once. Nice idea, but it suffers from the fact, that you, the game character, are not able to control this transformation. You walk around, suddenly you are a giant beast, no longer fitting through the door you want to walk through. Or you are the small lizard turning human again, being stuck in a small cave with only small lizzard holes. Or you are fighting a strong enemy as a beast or a human and suddenly you transform into the little lizzard, which has strong magic, but cannot endure much damage. Later in the game you will stumble upon a means to control this transformation a little bit, but to this point (or you missed it) ... playing LoL2 can be a pain in the ass. Ahh, yes. And there is a possibility of a plot stopper if you destroy or loose an item, which will be important later on in the Crypts without telling you, that it is important.
But besides that ... enjoy these two RPG gems from a time, where RPGs were games for people who liked to think instead of just mashing the attack button on your controller.

Golden history of videogaming

Posted on 2011-11-15 10:13:58 byJesugandalf's avatarJesugandalf:

The Throne of Chaos is surely among the best cRPGs of all time. A game that maybe was not the best of its time when looking at graphics or sound, the story it narrates is among the best in computer videogaming history. Full of twists and surprises, it seizes the player and forces him or her to go through the whole of it and complete the game.
Definitely worth buying. The secondread more part was not nearly as good, but The Throne of Chaos is definitely worth the price.

Tremendous personality and lasting fun

This is a great deal for $5.99, as each title is easily worth this much alone. I prefer Throne of Chaos because the sequel forces you to play as a certain type of person, and is too full of FMV distractions. The combination of photos and 3D navigation is not as attractive as the hand-drawn look of the first title. But don't let these minor complains about Guardians of Destiny deter you from picking up this fantastic light RPG bundle today!
