What's cool about it:

  • One of the best AH-64D Apache simulators, made with incredible attention to detail.
  • Fly solo missions or campaigns in 4 theaters of war, raining down low-altitude death from above!
  • Hop into the saddle with guns blazing in Arcade mode or benefit from the experience of actual AH-64D chopper pilots' feedback in Realistic mode.

Overview:

You're in command as your AH-64D Apache Longbow combat helicopter lifts off from its forward base. You're going into combat against the best the enemy can offer, but you've got the most advanced fighting helicopter in the world at your fingertips, packed with a devastating array of lethal weapons and state-of-the art technology.

You're ready to rock and roll but so is the enemy! They're waiting for you with combat helicopters of their own, backed up by radar-guided anti-aircraft guns and missiles and fixed wing aircraft. It's not going to be a cakewalk but you and your Apache are up to the challenge. Across four theaters of war-- Fort Hood where you train and then in war zones in Cyprus, Yemen, and Korea--you will fly the most fearsome helicopter that has ever been designed against enemies on land, sea, and air.

Apache Longbow took flying simulators to the next level. The developers constructed the flight model with fanatical attention to detail, going so far as to bring in Apache pilots to fly the in-game chopper and offer their feedback on how real the experience felt. Every flight simulator enthusiast will be pleased with the complexity and realism this game has to offer. Meanwhile, to make the game more accessible there is also an arcade mode where the flight mechanics aren't nearly as realistic, but there's still tons of fun to be had. So whichever you are - a slow-and-low hardcore sim fan or someone who just likes to fly about and blow things up - this game has something for you.

Minimum system requirements: Windows XP / Windows Vista / Windows 7, 1.8 GHz Processor, 512MB RAM (1 GB recommended), 3D graphics card compatible with DirectX 7 (compatible with DirectX 9 recommended), 2GB HDD, Mouse, Keyboard.

A pretty good Apache sim

Posted on 2012-02-28 11:55:55 byInquisitor54's avatarInquisitor54:

This was the first helicopter sim I ever played, and despite its age, if you take it on its own merits it's pretty good. It has, however, long since been surpassed by both versions of Janes Longbow and the community modded versions of Apache Versus Havoc and Commanche Versus Hokum.
Janes Longbow 2 is still the most realistic representation of the Apache to date, and also sportsread more an excellent dynamic campaign set on the Iranian border. It can also generally be made to run on modern systems with a glide wrapper with far better visuals. To its credit, Apache Longbow does have multiple terrain sets, but the campaigns pretty much always play out the same way.
So, although the missions really do give you a sense of flying through a combat zone with friendly tanks, aircraft and other military systems, they start to become a bit stale. Combat simulations are a genre that genuinely benefit from dynamic campaigns, even if they do not extend to the complexity of Falcon 4.0.
If you can accept this for what it is, or are a flight sim completionist, it's not a bad buy, especially for the price, but otherwise, you'll be wanting to track down second hand copies of the Janes Longbow series or pick up Commanche Versus Hokum from GOG and install the community mods.
I hope GOG continue to add to the sim collection, as its a much neglected genre these days, and many of the old simulations still hold up remarkably well if you can get them to run on modern systems.

Apache Longbow

All I have to say is "WOW"... this is a really groundbreaking flight sim, and the precursor to the Outstanding Longbow 2. I fly with a group of about 5-6 guys on a regular basis with Longbow 2, and its a real problem to get the game to run, let alone play multiplayer...I am just praying that Longbow 2 is next of the list for Good Old Games... it is still the standardread more for helo sims even by todays standard.... even though other good helo sims have come out here on GOG, Longbow 2 will be far and away the game to get... way to go GOG!

Nice Sim for its Time

Was my first pick-up when I bought my 1st "modern" PC. Chose this over a title called "Jane's Apache Longbow" and enjoyed it thoroughly, though I did pick up that "other" title later.
Though the graphics are dated, I still really like flying with this and its companion sim, Hind.
