I cannot boot the game.

My common error is "Failed to initialize player" with "failed to initialize Direct3d."
I searched around and found this was not uncommon back on release. I found this was supposed to be remedied by forcing DirectX 9 mode via -force-d3d9, but I received the same error.

I reinstalled DX9 to make sure it wasn't a corrupt install, but returned the same error upon trying to boot.

I also found that: -force-opengl was something to do with the game as well. When I tried that, the game will boot.
HOWEVER:
I only get a pink screen with a moving arrow on it, along with sounds. I can hit "esc" to bypass what I assume are the splash screens, and I can hover over what I assume are settings and so on, but I have no ability to do anything with it as all I can see is an arrow in a sea of pink.

So, solutions so far I have tried:
Reinstalling game
Re-downloading and reinstalling game
getting directx june 2010 redistributable
getting DX9 web installer
reinstalling dx9c
forcing dx9 via -force-d3d9
forcing opengl via -force-opengl
deleting NoClip folder in &userprofile%
all of this was done with anti-virus disabled and with exceptions for the game.

the only thing that has allowed the game to boot is the opengl solution, which results in pink screen with arrow and sounds. Can I get some help?

Hello,

Same issue for me, and "-force-d3d9" does not help.
I met the same issue with another game.

To prevent the game from using DX11, I found another way:

- Delete or rename those two files "d3d11.dll" and "dxgi.dll".

Now, the only way for the game is to use DX9. Then, for me, the game works like a charm.

Hope that this will help you.
It was a particular, and very unique, windows update issue exclusive to myself.

A particular windows update never installed, and I had to hunt it down and install it. The redistributables for certain things many of the games here require do not actually have them, as you're expected to have them from the windows updates.

Cannot vouch for above solution, but it's technically sound.
