Silverhawk170485: I doubt that in nowadays the very old Wizardry parts like 1, 2 and so on are so interesting for the most people anymore. Even part 6 and 7 are very pixeled but Wizardry 1 looks like this:

Im really no graphics-fetishist but this is really hard for me to look at. For some nostalgia feeling for some people, this might be ok or if you only want to complete the collection.
To be fair, the DOS version looked a tiny bit better than the Apple version. I suppose though, that is a matter of opinion.

Actually a funny story, years ago I bought the Ultimate Wizardry Archives box set from GameStop for 30 bucks. (This was years ago when it first came out.) I was at the counter and the cashier told me:

"Are you sure you want to buy this? It kinda sucks."

I told him that I remembered my late father playing Wizardry 1 (which is true) and I just wanted it for nostalgia. Bought the game. Walked away happy.

Now that package goes for ... 70 bucks? 80 bucks? (See link)

Almost got talked out of a hot collectors item.

The sad ending, my Mom ended up throwing it away anyway for, brace yourselves, religious reasons.

This was more than 10 years ago. I am still very bitter about it. I hope Wizardry 1-5 gets put up here on GOG.com so I can play them again.

I got my 'Archives' CD years ago for like $1. But those prices you see on Amazon are not the actual value of the game. Amazon's prices range from +50% to +300% of the actual value of such items, be they PC games or tabletop RPGs.

How on earth did you manage that? I would LOVE to have that disc again. I have even considered ponying up the huge ticket price on amazon for the box set.

Pretty sure it was a garage sale find and this was also before the whole 'Amazon + pricing bots =insanely overpriced games' stuff. Back when you could still get Wizardry 7, 8, & Archives in brand new condition for less than $20 easily on ebay or dozens of other online venues. Also mine is just the CD with no box, manuals or whatever else came in the box. Try watching copies of the Archives CD on ebay and such, taking note of what they are asking for it, how well or poorly they are selling etc., keeping an eye out for "Best Offer" options that pop up after a game has gone unsold for some time. I personally will not pay too much more than the original retail prices for PC games I collect (if I even go that high) because in my experience sellers are not all insane and many of them will realize that re-listing an item for the same price it has not sold for for years only costs them money and they will eventually come down to earth.
A prime illustration of what I am talking about: A few years ago I was watching a copy of Fallout Tactics (I already have the boxed set I bought like 10+ years ago but I wanted to see how much it was really selling for) that started out at like $89. I kept watching as the seller kept re-listing the game and periodically dropping the price.
The game was eventually offered for I think $14.99 buy it now price and as far as I know it did not sell (or it sold after I stopped watching).

Also visit garage sales, swap meets etc.
I got mine from some used games service in the Netherlands called Yestergames. Shipping back to Texas cost more than the game itself. Still worth it.

The deals are out there, even with robopriced amazon stores and shill-bid auctions. You just have to spend some time with google looking for things.

I apologize in advance to anyone who take offense to my post.

Wow, that sucks. If that happened to me, I'd go ballistic. I've never understood people like that, who act and think like they know everything, just because they see themselves as close to God, and try to spread their mania onto others, ruining all the fun in the world. It's because of people like this that I have a somewhat disparaging view of religious groups. I have nothing against God, mind you, but some people take Him WAY too seriously.

Anyway, put my vote in for Wizardry 1-5, for completeness' sake.

DCT: What? I heard nothing of legal limbo since Sir Tech owned the rights to the series and then sold it off to Gamepot's parent company, the only legal troubles I ever been aware off are the ones involving unpaid royalties Sir Tech owed the series creator Andrew Greenburg for Wizardry 1-5

august: I was under the impression that the entire ip is currently owned by the Japanese company that is still making Wizardry games.
That's what I thought as well.

it is, I was just clarifying that the issue that happened between Sir Tech and series creator Andrew Greenberg over unpaid royalties would have no bearing on IPM who are the japanese company that now own Wizardry nor should it have any influence on the series being re-released by them.

Has GOG been able to reach them before?

who? if your talking about the guys who own Wizardry now I would say yes since if they didn't 6-8 wouldn't be here, if your talking about Sir Tech there long gone, they went belly up in around 2000-2001 if I recall.

GeeLW: A few things:

It's too bad that the PSOne games Wizardry: Llylgamyn Saga (I-III) and Wizardry: New Age of Llylgamyn (IV-V) weren't ever brought to the US along with Wizardry VII (for some reason, VI was only on the Saturn, Super Famicom, PC98, and Amiga). Why? Well, the game offers up two graphics modes (original PC style with plain walls or nicely textured walls, lovely sprite art and lighting effects - both versions also sped up movement a bit, but you could still play step by step if you wanted to ) and an English text option for menus (not the story).

Wizardry VII was completely visually overhauled on the PSOne (but the character art, cinemas and info screens were the same as in Gold, but full screen), but entirely in Japanese though. I think it would have done well back in the day as a re-localized game, but oh well...
Perhaps I'm misunderstanding you but I will have to say that the entire series 1-8 were all released in North America.

You are correct that Wizardry 1-3 make up one trilogy known as the "Llylgamyn Saga" and the last three (6-8) form the "Dark Savant Series". Wizardry 5 was "Return of Werdna" and was not part of any of the series and was actually a departure from either trilogy. In "Return of Werdna" you assumed the role of the antagonist from the first game.

Additionally, the original release of Wizardry 7 was known as "Crusader's of the Dark Savant". However, during the long wait between the release of Wizardry 7 and Wizardry 8, the developers re-compiled Wizardry 7 with updated graphics and cut scenes and dubbed it "Wizardry Gold".

Yes, you are misunderstanding me (but that's OK). I'm in the U.S. of A. I was only referring to the Japanese localization of the first eight games. No worries, though. I'm misunderstood quite a lot these days ;^P
