Filben: Hey guys! Privateer 2 was an instabuy because it was one of my very fist PC games I've ever played

The slowdown problem with big/lots of ships and planets seems to occur to everyone using DOSbox. Fortunately the Win95 "deluxe" version runs fine and even with better cutscenes!

Here I figured out how to apply this on the GOG release, it is pretty simple though:
Works a treat! Thanks very much :-)
I've been trying to play this game since it's original release. It worked fine back on my old Win95 machine but since then it's been an uphill struggle.

(Using original discs, I have both DOS and Win versions)y

On my XP Machine: Win95 version runs best, compatibility settings cause the audio to crap out. Also, certain missions seem to cause exception errors (preventing me from progressing beyond disc 1 in the story). Dos version doesn't have audio issues, but crashes all the time.

On my Win7 Machine: Dos version is unplayably slow, FMVs stutter horribly. Win version not quite as slow, but crashes constantly.

Oddly, the GOG version is actually WORSE than the DOS CD version played in DosBox with default settings. Quite how they managed this is beyond me. What a waste of money :(

I'd kill to be able to play through the game in it's entirety, but in a decade I've only been able to get to the 'Visit Jan Mitor' mission before it explodes.

I've got original DOS version... and GOG version. Both runs fine but I've always set Sound Blaster as "a source of sounds". Try to run "Settings" and change sound and music devices to Sound Blaster. It could help...
Now i'm getting random crashes after playing for 1-2 hours.

Getting a bit annoying since there is no error message, game some crashes to desktop without any reason, and sometimes while game is still running but goes back to desktop, i have to close it with CTRL+ALT+Delete.

Anyone else getting random crashes ?

That's why we must save often. It's old bug and maybe it was fixed in Win95 ("Deluxe") version. Maybe...

It wasn't.

Sadly, later into the game you have to make longer 'trips' (10+ jumps) and as the missions get (slightly) more complex, it all starts to fall apart.

It happens with my original DOS and Win95 copies, and my GoG copy, on all 4 of my PCs (all different spec, running different OSes)

I gather the coding was pretty poor from the outset, though I don't recall actual crashing on my original DoS machine... just the 'planet lag' and slowdown when close to enemy ships.

New Unofficial Patch will fix those bugs, I hope:

Thanks for the heads-up, I wouldn't have caught this otherwise! Will go start testing right away!

YET another unplayable game sold by GOG and relying on the community to patch.

Unbelievable.
