Yes. Again, thanks a lot GOG. Being able to play a legit version of this problem-free again without resorting to black magic and voodoo is great.
I was very excited about Warlords III. But it differs from the CD version I have. For example, hero's abilities differ from those in the original...

Is there a way to play the original as it was released, without these changes?

nullptr128: I'm suprised they manage to make this playable on modern PC. I was playing W3 Reign of Heroes a lot as youngster; but I was never able to play it again after ~2000s. The game was unplayable even at Windows XP with full W98 compatability mode.

As even Heroes3 source code was lost, which is far far more popular than W3, I never hoped that I'll ever play this game again.
Why would you play RoH over DLR?! DLR was released like two years after RoH and improved every single aspect of the game (except for graphics which were always bad in W3)!

Also the source code for Heroes 3 was not lost (you can download it right now if you know where to look). That is how the popular "Horn of the Abyss" expansion was produced and released (and the HotA guys are about to release a second new town type - The Factory- which adds to their other new town -the Cove.)

Not really. The source code for AB and SOD expansions was lost, thats why we don't have Ubisoft HD versions released for those titles, only Restoration of Erathia. HOTA decompiled output executable which in fact may produce some sort of "source code" but its not how original developers write it because compilation is essentialy one-way process. The thing they work on is a C/Assembly mess without proper function names, code comments and barely readable code deduced by decompiler after all optimizations were put in.

kerzain: I've waited years and years for this.
I totally agree! Love this old game, but haven't played it for years. Just a lot of fun and good memories with it!

My bad. I was going by something I read (or perhaps misunderstood) a few years back but you obviously know better than I about this stuff.

My apologies.

No worries I'm glad I'd explain it:)
Woohoo!!! I did not see this coming!

I have only played a little of the Warlords 3 demo but I have wanted to play it again for a long time. And though this game is not lost in copyright hell like Discworld and No One Lives Forever it didn't seem like there was very much happening with it. I wonder who did the main work with this one? GOG, the copyright holders or someone else?

GOG has been so good for lovers of fantasy strategy games. They even got obscure stuff like Fantasy General, this was that least major hole fantasy strategy "subgenre".

Maybe they even will get Civilization 2 one day. (It works well under a virtual machine so it is no biggie.) Warlords 2 seem interesting as well.

Warlords 3 was on my wishlist all the way back when GOG launched. I was surprised when a few days ago I saw that GOG had it for sale. Of course I purchased it immediately. :)

I actually remember purchasing Reign of Heroes in big box form when it was originally launched. Thank you GOG for the memories. :)

Time to go kill bane allover again!

And play some capture the flags mode!

Thinking about the same thing. Working on reversing the patch using the files from the original game, but I am having some trouble doing it.
Care to go into more detail about what you've been trying to do?

In theory, it might be as simple as taking the /unit/hero/spell folders, from a Reign of Heroes installation, and overwriting the DLR files with them.
In the main menu there is a tickable button "Play with original Data". What I don't know is if it is refering to Original Reign of Heroes Data or vanilla 1.0 Darklords Rising Data.
