Anyone here still play Ultima Online? I missed out when it was in it's heyday, but is it worth checking out nowadays? I downloaded it, have completed a few quests, and it seems okay so far. Typical MMO fare. I really appreciate the artwork, very refreshing from the current crop of 3D crap...

Looks a bit like Runescape...

So is it worth playing? What sets it apart from other MMOs? How's the PvP? Etc...

Thanks!

Did you play the now-official UO? The one that was bought by EA?

Then I'll (probably) have to disappoint you that it shares little with the glorious original UO.

There are gazillions of different free shards for UO, if you look for the original experience, you should look for one that suits your needs. Basically you'll want a so-called pre-Trammel server ruleset. It's the closest you can get to the ultimate MMO sandbox with little to no restrictions regarding gameplay. Extensive PVP and criminal system, open world housing, learning-by-doing skill progression, player driven economy and so much more.

Still unrivaled to this day, but that's just my opinion.

The freeshard UO Second Age has a pretty damn hardcore PvP system. If someone kills you they or any other looters can take your possesions (except spellbooks and starting items) that aren't banked. Thieves stalk the busier town. There are lots of good people, but many play nasty rogues who hunt adventurers caught wandering alone. It's a fun experience, though I've only dabbled in the server. I've not even yet raised a character to max stats yet.

Thanks for the tip! I will get started on this right away...
I started second age last night, a guy gave me a house and 40k spent about 5 hours playing the shard is very active.

I had someone give me a shepherd's crook and they taught me how to train my stats with the Razor macro. That part of it seems pretty dumb, but once I get past this process, things should start shaping up I hope?

I don't really want anyone to give me a ton of money, I'd like to work getting stuff myself.

Would be cool to maybe have a GOG.com guild if it's possible? Still not sure how this game works.

I'm currently playing a mage named "Dahmer"

I've never had anyone be quite so generous. I haven't been on in months, but I'm Torbid if you ever see me. They have a good wiki explaining macros and some good skill sets. While the only banned macroing is mining (too many flood the server with items) people love to kill macroing players. Don't carry valuables if you are AFK.

Also look up advice on protecting your property. Thieves can be hiding in your house to kill you if you don't banish them quickly.
im lumbardo at least one of my chars. I know how the game worked back then I played from 1998 to 2003.
i've played UO off and on since it was released. EA, like many games ruined it. Play a freeshard, have a lot more fun and save some cash.
I swore off UO after they announced the cancellation of UO2 and the introduction of 3rd Dawn. It was good while it lasted, but I'm not sure I could put in so many hours of my life into that game again.

Ah, but it *was* fantastic while it lasted. I just happened to join the game and pick up carpentry/blacksmithing/tinkering/craftskills just before the Trammel Housing patch - I earned enough money in the great Furniture rush to buy furniture to afford my own house in two days of continued sales (and a devastated forests' worth of logs).

And I also remember the hilarity - I'd set up shop with a table, chair and candle with my pack horses, and desperate thieves would run up and steal both my table and my chair out from under me. In the end I did my business at the bank standing up.

(Oh, and I always set my beard on fire at the forge, only to dunk my face into the water trough nearby - the other players enjoyed the playacting)

I used to play the Baja server, if anyone remembers the original UO servers. Name of Lorstar.
Haha, "training skills with Razor"
Wow, does that bring back memories... I played UO for years, from the start. Left shortly after the Blackthorn expansion... (wtf? blackthorn's a robot now? did you guys even LOOK at the ultima lore?)

It really was a great game in it's heyday tho. Guilds weren't just guilds so people could kill big raid monsters or so noobs could get free stuff... Guilds were guilds because without a guild's support, you were dead. Every time you stepped out of town, you were dead. It was a giant gang-war of epic proportions... and i loved every second of it. :)

RIP to UO, as it's current inception is a joke, the real game died a decade ago.
I remember I got so addicted to a RP intensive UO shard that I didn't leave the house for 2 weeks. This is when I decided I need to remove the game from my hard drive. But it was so fun while it lasted... Bards singing songs on the streets, player killers unleashing demons in the city centres, me and my friends venturing into deep caverns to kill some monsters and then heading off to the tavern to celebrate. *wipes a tear*
I remember I received the first box copy from shelves from my grandmother, then I took it home and my parents saw that it was a pay to play game, and took it back. I've since then always wanted to try this amazing sounding game. I know I was like 8 or 9 at the time, but for my age I was already into some really complex games in the first place. Oh what I would give to go back and see what I would've thought of it at that day and age....

Haha, late reply here, but Baja I was a murderer by the name of Zeddicus. Had a lot of fun on there.
